It happens far to often, youre trying to make the final blow to put down that bandit leader and your companion snatches up the kill. So when you go to brag, youre bragging about your companions kill. Do you still get any recognition for the kill?

Not really, but your adventuring band probably seems more awesome. Whether that matters, or it's just how awesome you are that determines whether someone joins you, is up for debate.

A DFHack wizard might be able to tell, or a ‼SCIENTIST‼.

One way you could experiment is to roll a new character, not changing any charisma-related attributes and making yourself a legendary shield user or something. Get a companion, DFHack him into godhood, let him kill thousands of goblins and beasts, see if you can recruit more people than the two you were able to at the beginning.
