Mastering the forces of nature would bring us glory...
« on: March 29, 2016, 04:40:34 am »

So, one day we'll be able to send out troops to attack bandits, press-gang the hill dwarves into the army and send them out against the vile forces of darkness. All of which will be jolly good fun.

In the meantime it might make sense if the Captain of the Guard, in a wild-eyed fit of righteousness, rounded up a few able-bodied men and went off to kill a titan every so often.

You only have to wander around the fortress in adventurer to know that everyone is obssessed by the surrounding wildlife and bringing glory unto the site, why wait for a gullible adventurer, right?

The captain might petition you for the chance to gather some buddies and go out megabeast hunting, same as monster slayers (suposedly) petition to explore the caves.

Those surviving returning from such a quest would have much boosted stats through experience (would be more benficial after a nerf to normal training of course).

And imagine the Fun when you realise half your military are gone just as the goblin hordes arrive. :)

Umm no? The captain of the guard GUARDS the fortress. A mercenary or captain might be a better idea.

Was trying to think of someone who could conceivably enlist members of the other military squads. Realistically it end up being some no-mates hunter who'd go out to find dragons. Daft noble perhaps?

If it's a preemptive strike it counts as fortress defense, right?

I think you should be able to send out such parties as early as you form squads, but maybe it becomes a special type of noble demand to slay a nearby nuisance (titan, semi-megabeast, bandit ring, etc.).

Yes, I was thinking noble demands would probably entail you having to send out troops to catch a beast or something one day.
What I was going for with this suggestion was to have dwarves act a bit more by themselves (based on the way they talk in adventurer). The way monster slayer visitors are supposed to do (not that they ever seem to).
