Better-Recognizable Wild Plants
« on: March 01, 2016, 10:34:07 am »

Currently, all the non-garden vegetable wild plants look exactly the same ( " ), and are colored by tree spatter. I can't tell rope reeds and hemp from fisher berries or hide root. They should look like their field harvest-able forms.

I can't remember if it was always like this, or whether DF2014 changed it.

This is a more general problem with the graphics in the game.  More serious when it involves matters of life and death such as: Is that a tower-cap or is that a giant olm?  :) ???

Neither! It was a blind cave ogre!

In which case I am still alive unless I am stupid enough to take companions with me; [CAN_LEARN] [CAN_SPEAK] and [INTELLIGENT] creatures are all completely harmless since [LARGE_PREDATOR] is not compatible with any of those tags.

Companions on the other hand do not understand this and immediately charge at anything that does not have the [BENIGN] tag because companion AI is pretty basic at the moment and babysitting companions is one of the 'joys' of adventure mode.

To return to topic sort-of, what we probably need is some kind of warning system that informs us what creatures are hostile, hence getting rid of the ACSI camouflage that certain creatures benefit from unduly.  So it would say "there is a hostile giant olm ahead of you" on the screen.

Maybe a way of highlighting living creatures so at least you have to notice them before your companions take off at full sprint?

That would do as well but it still does not deal with the problem of multiple creatures have the same tile.  In other words I still have to L-Check the map in order to find out what kind of living creature it is that is being highlighted.  An announcement at the bottom of the screen along the lines of "you encounter X number of X creature" would do.  Combined with the system you propose to highlight living creatures we would be able to spot threats very quickly.

Neither are much of a real threat to anyone with dodging skill. Most hostile creatures run off in terror if you can hold out long enough to do a bit of damage. The main problem comes from unskilled civilians filled with drunken courage trying to pick a fight with them. This is unlikely to be an issue in adventure mode.

In the absence of the ability to simply load again everything hostile is a real threat since one bad dice roll and that is it for you.  I had a giant cave toad get lucky one time and rip out my throat even though I was wearing star silver armour (that is the ubermetal from Direforged mod).

Very few armor types actually cover the throat/neck area with the exception of leather armor, or some form of mail armor. Granted it was lucky to even hit you, as I said, almost none of the "conventional" armor types cover the neck.

On the topic though. It would be nice if plants bearing fruits had a different character for them. Maybe they can be the cut gem icon? What are the odds you'd have a cut gem above the surface anyways?

It's also used for pond turtles, bituminous coal, gear assemblies, and webs. Nevermind, that's rough gems.

Anvils (σ) or earrings (δ) work, too, and look more like fruit.
