Re: The Star-pathers (Aurora 4X) NO LONGER CANCELLED

I've been playing and taking notes, so I have a large backlog of interesting stuff that I have to RP write for.

June 2050: A Tribal-class vessel surveys Jupiter and finds plentiful sorium in the atmosphere. Long-term plans are drawn up for a colony on a Jovian moon and a fuel harvester base ferrying the sorium to the colony for distribution throughout the vast Federation.

August 2050
: Ever since the foundation of the Federation, the world has been living better. With the roboticization of service industries, jobs were continually lost, but a system of increased taxes, regulations, and socialism, very popular among the poor and middle class, fixed the situation. Now many jobs are three to four days a week, and only 6 hours, to accommodate the decreasing jobs. Schools are better than ever (teachers remain one of the only nonroboticized service industries, as robots just can't deal with humans in such a responsive, unique, and important way yet), and academies graduate thousands of scientists, mechanics, and logicians.

And now, with popular support, the ComFed party is pushing toward ratification one of the most widely-ranging bills: the Communism bill, which would have the government take control of all private corporations, companies, and industries, recompensating owners and shareholders, and then making decisions that "are in the best interest of the people, not the shareholders" (Ruignetz, head of the ComFed party).

-----

"I stand before you now, having brought about (with the help of millions of people)... the revolution. In just a few short hours, when the bill is ratified, control of the corporations in the entire Federation will be in the hands of the government. A government which has shown itself to take actions, several times, that hurt its own interests, in order to protect those of the people. I trust this government, this Federation, more than I trust a corporation. Corporations don't care about people. They care about nothing but money. This government cares about you.

When this Federation becomes communist, the government will not make everyone's decisions for them. I want to dispel fears of an Orwellian dystopia. You will still choose what jobs you take, where you want to live, if and who you marry, how many children you have (if any). No one will be forced to move to space (though I doubt many of you would complain). Life under Communism will be largely the same, in the beginning. It will be slightly better, perhaps. But the real change will be shown soon enough. When the difficult decisions come, the government will show its true colors. It will stand up for the rights of the people, it will do what is right for them.

But to do this, it has to represent you. So vote, or an Orwellian nightmare just might be in your hands. Vote responsibly, know who you're voting for and their history. The government will have more power now, and this is good. Don't let the government slip out of your hands. Remember, we represent you. Keep it that way." - speech by Krailos Ruignetz

September 2050: A duranium shortage sweeps the Federation, leading to the halting of most projects.

"EUA NEWS - Vast deposits of duranium sit far below our feet. But the mines extracting them have not kept up with demand, and now a shortage worse than any this generation has ever known is at hand. Duranium is used for everything from consumer appliances and tools to spacecraft and research labs. Until a stockpile develops again, matters will only get worse.

...No sooner does a shipment of duranium arrive at a stockpile before it is whisked away for a project. Only a few tons at a time reside in the world's stockpiles...

Chairman Ruignetz has this to say about the shortage:

"This is the difficult decision. The only way to fix this is to build more mines. The only use of duranium until the shortage is gone, save a 5% maintenance and consumer goods requirement, will be to make materials necessary for digging more mines. This will hurt the government's finances, yes. But it is the best solution for the people. Would a corporation do this? Never. It's not profitable. But it's good for you.

Opponents of Communism say that the change somehow precipitated this shortage. That is nonsense. I am a good scientist in my day. I have looked at the data, it shows that anyone with a sense of sight could see this coming. The corporations were blind, they didn't care. This was going to happen, but we can shorten the disaster by decades if we change production orders NOW."

Jack Eucher, spokesperson of the Factory Union, says that he plans to support these production orders. It is fairly certain, then, that this change will occur, but it still has to pass the Council to last more than a year."

December 2050: The population of the moon (2 million) is now enough for service industries and agriculture to take only 40% of the people. 60% are available, so the three Transporters bring over mines and construction factories.

February 2051: Jake Humphreys, a kinetic weapons specialist, completes research into Gauss cannons. In addition, the Day Freighter Group (now taken over by the City of London. Don't ask.) launches a huge, a large, and a small freighters. ((I don't even know how to write that.)) Apparently, construction began before the work order change, and the City of London was technically constructing it, not a Federal shipyard, so they were allowed to continue, needing only a few more tons of duranium altogether for completion. The City hopes to get more revenue by moving around parts and materials, letting the Federal ships keep their sights on longer-term projects.

June 2051: With the infrastructure trade with the Lunar colony becoming extremely profitable, the DFG launches three more freighters, and the Federal government plans to transport pre-constructed components for a Commercial Spaceport to speed trade. (For those who are wondering: profit is still using to incentivize certain things while allowing inefficient choices to remain. It's either that or get rid of choices.)

August 2051: Sam Hilton, a prominent researcher in the field of defensive systems and hull material design, develops a radical new means of producing hull armour that resembles the production of traditional ceramics. Though the new material is more expensive per ton, it is in turn much stronger than the previous hull material, composite duranium hulls. This means that less of it is needed.

January 2052: Sam Wright, a promising new officer, graduates from training. His teachers have outstanding praise for him, especially in the fields and areas of initiative, training, fighter combat, logistics, and reliability.

March 2052: The two Tribal-class vessels, having mostly finished their decades-long survey of the asteroid belt, now examine Uranus (shown to have a moderate amount of sorium) and its moons (most of which are bare of useful minerals except for Uriel, which has a small but not ignorable amount of corundium). In addition, as Quaoar is found to have plentiful neutronium, corundium, and sorium, its small moon, named Weywot, is investigated further. Though it has no minerals, it is interesting for astronomers, and the two bodies may support one side of the debates over the formation and definition of dwarf planets and their moons.

April 2052: : Scott Franklin, in a televised program, releases his long-awaited and celebrated research for “the Increase of Mining Output by Means of Improved Extraction and Collection Techniques”, which are immediately placed into effect by every government mine. (Which, because of communism, is almost every mine.) Despite the long research time, the techniques devised by the ingenious Franklin do not involve lengthy or time-consuming changes to the mines, and so the increased output may be noticed within days. The research is hailed as a way out of the years-long duranium deficit, called by many a modern form of recessions.

I like your portrayal of Future Communism.  I had to add an adjective to differentiate from Historical Communism.

I think my character is still going to sleep with a Lazpistol under his bed, though.

Thanks! And about the lazpistol: Hehe, yeah. There are a few people (namely the former wealthy guys who EXPLOITED THE PROLETARIAT) who are quite angry.

May 2052: Scott Franklin's hard work makes his asthma act up. He is unable to work as hard, but still continues to make blueprints fora ship components that could stabilize the currently-hypothetical Einstein-Lucas-Rosen wormholes, commonly known as "jump points."

September 2052: Luke Lucas develops a more fuel-efficient burning technique for engines, utilizing plasma jets and exhaust filters. The technology will be implemented in all future ships, though it would be challenging to fit the old ships with the new tech.

November 2052: The Tribal 001 encounters a small asteroid, and has to adjust its path to avoid collision. However, this prevents it from using Jupiter to slingshot back to Earth from a Kuiper Belt object. While it returns to Earth safely, only 1.5% of the total fuel capacity was left. This convinces engineers and managers alike that a retrofit is necessary, and such a fitting is planned to be done in a few years.

December 2052: Scott Franklin is now seventy years old and retires in glory, having nearly single-handedly brought the Federation out of the Terra Sola era and saved it from the Great Duranium Crash. ((editor's note: should not ignore the achievements of others, especially Ewan Bird))

January 2053: Ewan Bird officially takes over as Head of Construction and Production Sciences.

February 2053: Laboratories around the globe focus on jump-point related technologies. Sam Wright rises through the ranks to command a missile complex from the early 2000's.

June 2053: Plans for the improved geological survey vessels are put on hold, as the entire solar system has now been completely geologically surveyed! Promising amounts of transnewtonian minerals have been found, and skilled geologists may be able to discover more, so the Tribal-class ships may be repurposed to serve as transportation vessels, or refitted into gravitational surveying vessels to explore the possibilities of Einstein-Rosen-Lucas wormholes.

April 2054: The Day Freight Group expands into plastics and chemical shipping in order to supply the Lunar colony.

May 2054: Jake Humphreys joins the naval force. He is notable for sharing a name with Jake Humpreys the missiles expert.

January 2057: For the last three years, things have been quiet. Researchers have researched, mines constructed, and troops trained. The research was mostly on internal matters, such as shipyard construction or wealth, with some labs working on beam controls instead. The Council has stated that it wishes for some efforts be made to ensure that the Federation has a significant enough military presence in space to repel attacks. From whom they did not state.

The Tribal-class ships have been refitted with modern technology.

December 2057: The Day Freight Group sends off a few sorium harvesters to Jupiter, using the technology designed earlier this year.

September 2062: The last five years have been spent researching for fleets - weapons and armour. Jake Humphreys designs a faster Gauss cannon.

October 2052: Luke Lucas designs a turret, and George Chan designs a beam fire control with up to 3000 km/s tracking. The Day Group puts a robotic mining expedition to Venus to extract the plentiful duranium there, and the Federation buys the output. Experimental mass drivers are used to move the minerals back to Earth.

January 2063: A civilian mining colony is set up on Mars.

March 2064: A civilian mining colony is set up on Quaoar. George Chan develops a tracking system that works up to 32,000 km away.

July 2064: Jake Humphreys develops an even faster Gauss cannon, Luke Lucas develops a faster turret, and Owen Moss develops a faster fire control.

August 2064: Jessica Hanson's research leads to a breakthrough in sensing ships - using gravitational waves! The Anthony Watts Geology Team finishes prospecting on Venus and moves on to Mars.

October 2064: Alfie Mahmood develops the Theory of Electronic Warfare, and plans to make counter-electronic and counter-counter-electronic technologies are made.

December 2054: Luke Lucas designs a capacitor that recharges faster.

May 2065: Jake Humphreys researches a larger, stabler laser.

July 2065: George Chan develops a fire control system that can optimally track ships or missiles going at less than 4,000 km/s. Luke Lucas develops a technique for creating coherent light at near-ultraviolet wavelengths - a powerful laser!

August 2065: Luke Lucas is given a task - design a military engine that sacrifices efficiency for power. He develops the Reynolds-Philips 315 EP Ion Drive. Alfie Mahmood furthers his research in Electronic Warefare, developing a method of counteracting electronic countermeasures.

January 2066: Luke Lucas designs a faster-recharging capacitor.

March 2066: Ten Reynolds-Philips Ion Drives are constructed in preparation for the shipbuilding to come.

April 2066: The Day Freight Group scraps its old freighters and makes new, better ones.

December 2066: Charlie Hayes completes research into the Giles-Webb CIWS-160, designed to be placed on all commercial ships as a point-defense anti-missile system.

February 2067: Jake Humphreys develops a larger laser, and David Howells designs a cargo handling system.

March 2067: Isabella Hooper, a rising scientific genius, researches meson cannons, which can pass through shields and armour to destroy ship components.

April 2067: A smaller cryogenic module and a flag bridge are researched.

May 2067: Better ground unit tactics are developed.

July 2067: Particle beams, compact electronic counter-countermeasures, and reduced-size lasers are researched.

September 2067: Meson cannons are designed, small engineering sections are developed, and electronic countermeasures are researched.

I've got notes up 'til the 80s or 90s, but I've got a bunch of errors. Leaving for vacation tomorrow, so this is likely to become yet another months-long hiatus.

See you soon late! Hope this'll pick up pace soon, now that we're going TO THE STARS!
