I like the 1920s Virginia coal mining setting, but crazy hi-tech doesn't appeal to me. Perhaps if it was mundane but some sort of supernatural element is injected into it via the mine?

How's this: something terrible is discovered in the mines and the company hushes it up to prevent the government from investigating and finding all sorts of violations. Then in the company town around the mine strange and deadly events occur. Two detective agencies are hired by the company and it's rival respectively to investigate what's going on.

Eldritch horror and corporate sabotage wrapped up in a gritty 1920s setting.
