Hello beasthuman folk, and welcome to the LP of my new mod Of MultiBeasts and Renassance, where you can play as Hamsterfolk, Sperm Whale Warriors, and pretty much most beastfolk you can imagine (but unfortunately not Elkmen currently, but I'm working on that).

As for this LP, the goal is to create weapons and armor with my puny Hamsterfolk, then equip adventurers to tackle anything that threatens the little guys, along with causing general havoc in the world.  Feel free to volunteer as either the brawny Adventurers or the Hamsterfolk that actually guide things.  Note: Adventurers can be any type of beastfolk.  I won't be adding in creatures that Toady One hasn't implemented yet, but I'll happily uplift anything into a beastman if you happen to pick something that is not already a beastman.

I'll start posting the saga of the Hamsterfolk once they get off the ground.  Currently, the search is for something to create weapons and armor with, as this particularly generated civilization is quite poor in weapon materials.*

*Note that this is not a mod feature, but rather part of the basic game.  If your dwarves don't start near iron, you don't get iron.  And so forth for other metals.  This particular civilization only has silver, but also bronze weapons.  The Bronze weapons is probably a feature that ensures every civ has access to picks and axes (or spades and hatchets in the case of this mod's Hamsterfolk who are too small to use picks and many axe types).

Edit: The above is only half of it: In the version of my mod that this game started in, there was no failsafe to ensure all civs have steel, which means all civs started without anvils.  Yay.  After working around that, I found that I goofed with Armor designations, so the poor Hamsterfolk had no clothing or armor.  Also goofed by omitting a working military/fortress guard.  If anyone survives long enough for their monarch to settle in their fortress, they should also get access to the top-tier military tree.  But anyways, thought it would be nice to showcase my mod without tons of bugs.  Save below.

Supplies:
Note this particular Hamster Civilization are Tundra Hamsters, and thus generally only eat meat, so no booze or plants to start.  We'll have to fix that soon, as all the water is frozen.  However, I did embark with a herbalist/brewer (also the doctor, but whatever).

Pets:
Since we didn't have all those pesky plants to fill up our wagon, we were able to stock up on pets.  Germlins, strangely enough, only cost 1 point, but their hides cost 5.  I'm very eager to see what we get when we butcher them...
Wolverines, if you don't already know, are pretty cool pets.  While they can't be trained for war or hunting, they can go into Martial Trances.  Sadly, they don't come with Adamantium Claws...

Unfortunately, the version of my mod in which this LP exists lacks the bug fixes that ensure that all playable civs start with an anvil.  While I can certainly steal an anvil, and whatever I steal will be around for this particular fortress on reclaim, it would probably be best to start over.
Plus, my new version has the advantage of Steel being sold by all trading civs, so we are no longer absolutely reliant on map-based iron and flux.

But, I've already crafted a minor narrative about this particular civ, so fan fiction away:

Letters of Euke to unnamed party:
Letter 1:
Dear Madam,
We have arrived safely at our new destination.  I will continue with my mission of searching for this illusive "Iron" that our traders have reported.  I understand that you are unable to assist us any further until we actually discover this new metal.

I imagine that things are exactly as we left them: They would not allow any change.  I am glad for your secret support, even if you must publicly condemn all attempts to introduce new ideas, such as Ironworking and the consumption of anything other than meat.  Rest assured, someday we will provide you the implements of change, and we strive to create you a new home away from the Champions of No Change.
Your Humble Servant,
Euke

Letter 2:
Dear Madam,
We have discovered a new food source!

After a hard day in the mines, I was hungry and we were between Butchery Seasons.  But then I remembered that our people would often eat worms in the ground when desperate.  So I searched in the soil, and found these green things.  They were easier to harvest than worms, because they didn't move as much.  And they were edible!  We all ate well, and they were better than worms!

This lead me to think "What else could be edible?"  I noticed some of these green surface worms had things growing on them, similar to eggs coming from some of our animals except they were attached to the green surface worms.  I tried a few, and they were also good and edible!

We are now holding a feast to celebrate.  I have enclosed some samples for your independent testing.  Please test them after you open the barrels: They rot if not properly stored.

Your Humble Servant,
Euke

Letter 3:
Dear Madam,
My crazy aunt used to grind up worms, eggs, and other burrowing creatures into blood juice.  It was a bit of a delicacy in my household, so I attempted the same with our newly-discovered food sources: The green surface worms and their eggs.

BEST NIGHT EVER.  They create a wonderful new drink with effects that temporarily remove all worries.  We held another feast, which was probably the best feast that any of us has ever attended.  Unfortunately, none of us were able to move the next day, but it was worth it.  I enclose a barrel for your private testing.  This may be what you need to "Loosen Up" the Powers That Be.

Your Humble Servant,
Euke

End of Letters, can anyone guess who my character is writing to?

A noble.  Duh.

Very Astute!  But which noble?

Hint?

EDIT: OK, Ok, I decided to show everyone how to "Steal an Anvil", for when your modmaker omitted something that would ensure all civs start with anvils.  It's pretty fun actually: First you play your iron-less civ to the point where an adventurer could actually find it via landmarks, then you create another fortress with iron and thus anvils for which you can send two and again some landmarks, and finally you create an adventurer to transport the anvil.  I'm sure that I'm not the first to do so...but I may very well be the first to play a Whale Adventurer helping Hamsters steal from...To Be Continued!

I have already completed objective 1: Play the fort till your adventurer can find it.  In my case, I created some roads and dug out the area around the fort.

Said Fort:

And the update I previously promised never to give, ha ha:

As you read above, these Hamsters, unlike their kin, decided to harvest some crops.  And what crops they harvested!

As you may or may not know, this mod started out as a compilation of other mods.  Below is a feature I didn't even know existed, and am unsure how to use:

Speaking of things I don't know about, how exactly did you hurt yourself so badly little fellow?

Trading was rather...lackluster.  But at least I bought some Bronze.  Especially since I haven't found any Iron yet.

INTERLUDE: Letter to Euke from Unnamed Lady
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

So after getting some useless migrants with no weapon skills whatsoever, I retired this fort so that we could create a kind Fortress to "donate" an anvil for our poor hamsters, who in version .66 of my mod don't need to resort to such shenanegans.  We'll find out after obtaining the anvil that this LP was created before another rather significant bugfix...but I'll expose that flaw at a latter time.  Tootles!

Re: Of Hamsterfolk and Sperm Whale Warriors: Secret of Steel?
« Reply #8 on: October 16, 2015, 02:46:20 pm »

I've actually gone on to make several bugfixes.  But might as well achieve the objective of forging with steel in this LP with this really old version.  Expect an update.

EDIT: Actually, no anvils exist in this world.  A review of the various cultures in-game shows that no civilization has gone past the bronze age.  No Iron, No Steel.

I'll sort through the [R]eclaims, but unless that bears fruit, this world will never know the Secret of Steel.

EDIT2: No reclaims.  However, Deon's Genesis Reborn Mod had a Stone Anvil Adventurer reaction.  A little splicing into the save file, and we may be able to ask a kindly adventurer to make an anvil for this world.  Stay tuned!

EDIT3: SUCCESS!  Now, for a slight delay while I find a new imagehost site and scream at ImageShack for ceasing to be free...
And then I remembered that I use TinyPic...

And now: Continuation of the Let's Play!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Now, the newest version of my mod gives all beastfolk access to steel, which means they all can buy anvils.  So a reaction in adventure mode to make an anvil isn't necessary (but I'll add it if requested).

So, bad news is: In this older version of my mod, these hamsterfolk can't create armor, or any clothing.
The good news is: Other beastfolk can, so I can totally steal+refit armor with adventurers.

I'll open a poll on whether these plucky hamsters should continue or be reborn.

EDIT: Oh, I ran out of options in the poll, but I have no problem making a Hamster Militia without armor.  But I reserve the right to refer to them as "Commandos".

Based upon the poll, I'll probably restart with Hamsterfolk.  Goal: Hamsterfolk Phalanx!
...If only I can figure out how to get them to use weapons and shields.  I'm unsure if they can use any weapons one handed.*

EDIT: I was considering uploading the save.  But the military doesn't work, and I can't figure out a workaround.  Eh, I'll upload it anyways, maybe somebody wants the challenge of playing without a military (Champion and Hammerer should still work, for what its worth, but not Fortress Guards).

The Promised Save.

EDIT2:*Any weapons beside Hatchets, that is.  But, besides Hatchets being obsolete (well, except for being the only one handed weapon, which I guess counters that), they're probably the worst weapons in the mod.  Although that is total speculation, I really don't know. Arena Testing Complete: Short Swords, Short Spears, Military Picks, and Crescent Axes can all be used with shields by Hamsterfolk because they are slightly over the minimum one-handed sizes.  And Hatchets don't suck: Their small size gives them speed maybe?  Dunno how they would fare versus armor as I believe they only do cut damage, but they tear apart unarmored foes.
