How to transfer Giant Olm from Cage Trap to Cage
« on: November 08, 2015, 08:52:02 pm »

I caught a Giant Olm in a Cage Trap and it was hauled to my animal stockpile.

Built a Cage next to it and connected it up to a lever.
Clicked on the Cage and assigned the Giant Olm to the Cage that's hooked up to the lever.

Been waiting 20 minutes and no dwarves are moving the Giant Olm into the cage.
There are plenty of inactive dwarves with Animal Hauling on.
Is Animal Hauling the skill needed to transfer animals from Cage Traps to Cage?

What am I doing wrong?

Edit: Finally, after 30 minutes it worked!

Hauling "hostile" creatures requires both animal hauling and animal training labors be enabled on the same dwarf. This is either a feature or a bug, depending on who you ask.

In the future, you can simply build the cage containing the creature where you want it, instead of moving the creature from cage to cage (use the e(x)pand option on the build-cage selection screen).

You do not want to; the giant olm will be deposited in a stockpile and then you just build the olm cage as a building.  You do not really want to transfer between cages anyway since it leads to a silly situation where you cram infinite creatures into the same cage; it is rather like using dumps to store items but with creatures.

Slippery slope fallacy. Equally silly is the situation with a single duck per elephant-sized cage.

Actually, cages don't have a size at all. They are quantum. Or something. How else can they "hold infinite creatures"?

Only if the gaps between the bars are sized for an elephant.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

More like how a single duck is placed in a giant cage than

Code: [Select]

It's more like a small room than a cage, otherwise.
