Am I totally wrong, or is this not more or less what causes geysers, hot springs, etc?  You have magma (which normally is much much farther down than the water table) or maybe just a vent of super-hot gases probably given off by magma, which heats an area of the water table... isn't that how it works?

So in short:

magma + water table =/ certain death...

magma + water table = dwarven bathhouse w/ steam room!  In the barracks no less!

I think toady mentioned that weapons/metal items will be available from caravans in the next version.
