Magma + Water Table=Certain Death
« on: August 14, 2007, 10:43:00 pm »

In the upcoming version, unless I am mistaken, every map has a water table.  What happens if you accidently dig a whole that drops the magma river into the water table?

The thought of this happening is hilarious. I dunno, a dwarven sauna?

Well, it should produce some steam... But my guess would be that it would work just like in normal life when lava hit the ocean: it just get down and create a new ocean floor when it cool off.

In DF, I don't know... Maybe it would just cool off the seal itself after some time?

Well, my last save backup has a magma channel near the river, let's try that.

Utunnels, he means in the new 3d version. On the lowest level of every fort there should be a water table, which is just porous rock that leaks water into surrounding empty squares. What happens if you have a magma fall lead down into the water table?

I think it will fill up and harden, plugging itself up. But only Toady knows for sure.

Oh, I see.

Seriously, magma can turn into stone. But that's just too complex for the game.

Well it does already with the magma flood when you breach the river, so the bulk of the code must be there already.

The problem is if you have a permanent source of magma spilling into a permanent source of water.  I am not very knowledgable about these things, but it seems like it could cause headaches.

Well assuming it did form rock after time you'd get a slow build up of rock filling the water channel the magma reach another point of escape (like your bridge over the river) or it fill the whole water source....

I can see it in my head at least :P no idea what the game would actually do...

I remember a conversation we had with toady on IRC one night when we was adding the water table code. He had made a volcano in an ocean, to test the code for lava, and noticed a whole ton of steam when he started, and then it stopped as it all cooled to obsidian. And then he noticed that the whole level was just a big plate of obsidian floating on the water Aparently he had made a bug where everything below the first level was "literally" all water.

This means that in the new version, water+magma = steam + obsidian squares. So if you leak magma into the river, it will cool it off and cause an obsidian plug to form and not allow more magma to go through, probably....

Cool, infinite supply of obsidian to make everything in the whole fortress out of!
