You basically have two camps on these forums: the people who want an UI overhaul, and the fanboys who will litterally tell you the DF interface is the best they've ever seen and they can't imagine why anyone would dislike it :-\ .

There's a reason I run Masterwork Dwarf Fortress, it lets you cut a lot of corners and do things the way you should be able to do them from the beginning. For example, build a workshop and tell the dwarves to make "one set of iron armour", rather than "erm, two boots, two greavers, two chestplates, two gloves, a helmet and did I miss anything, let's see...".

There are two kinds of people in the world: People who agree with me and satanic terrorist nazis who literally caused 9/11.

Really though, I think what people disagree on is how much of a priority the interface should be. Even Toady thinks it's kind of a godawful mess at the moment.

Oi. Be careful of Godwin's law.

On topic: I've gotten more than a little annoyed with cutting gems, since mining adds gems, and I have to re-set the workshop to cut all gems.

I see two possibilities:
1) Set it so that all gems will be auto-cut before set. This would make the gem setting+cutting take longer, but won't require a stockpile of cut gems, and simplify production of encrusted items. A separate action would just cut gems, but make them unavailable for setting. This is how some jewelers worked in real-life in the early middle ages (in Germany).
2) Create a generalized 'cut gems' action at the jewelers, that will cut all gems as they become available. I like this option, more so because the gem cutting and setting are separate labours, and like this we can more easily separate them. Perhaps we can also include a generalized 'set gems' action.

As a programmer myself, I dread making the statement "it's only one small change", so I'd love some feedback on these options from someone more familiar with DF's inner workings.

Edit: also, making 'set of armor' would be awesome. One long action, requiring multiple materials, resulting in multiple items has been implemented before.

Wait a second...
I mean, you have to count one by one how many rose quartzes you have, how many pink tourmalines, how many prases, how many yellow zircons, how many everything; not to mention, sometimes there are two different types of gems sharing the same color, that might make it harder to count how many gems of each type are.

Are you not aware that you can use the stocks menu to figure out how many of each gem you have? I mean, it's not great, but it's far better than counting them out by cursor like this.

He's saying counting by stocks.
