Manager: Cut ALL gems
« on: December 28, 2014, 07:11:44 pm »

Today, if I want to cut all the rough gems I possess, I've got to either check one by one, to see what kind of gem it is, and cut it.

That way, I've set the following tasks in the manager:

  • Cut rose quartz 6/6
  • Cut pink tourmaline 5/5
  • Cut prase 8/8
  • Cut yellow zircon 3/3
  • Cut clear zircon 7/7
  • Cut pink garnets 11/11

I mean, you have to count one by one how many rose quartzes you have, how many pink tourmalines, how many prases, how many yellow zircons, how many everything; not to mention, sometimes there are two different types of gems sharing the same color, that might make it harder to count how many gems of each type are.

Now, I know DF is a game about micromanaging your fortress, but I honestly would only like to give one simple order to the manager, in order to avoid this nuisance:

  • Cut gems 40/40

The same goes to Encrust X With Y. I'd like to be able to simply plain give the orders:

  • Encrust Finished Goods With gems 40/40

instead of micromanaging which gem should I encrust in my furniture and finished goods.

So... either way, if anyone also has an alternative to this, I'd like to hear it too.

Cut gems: absurd number/absurd number.

Go to gem cutter's workshop.
Select "cut pink garnets"
Hit Repeat.

Yeah, I know, that's the only semi-quasi-viable alternative I've found. It's still annoying when you already have a big pile of different kind of gems to cut and encrust, because it's hard to distribute the work equally between all your gem workshops. Usually the Manager does that for you, but he can't help me know, can he? :P

Thanks for the answer!

Yup, too many people use the manager as a crutch.  Hell I barely ever use the guy.  Mostly infuriates me that jobs don't respect workshop profiles.  I'd much rather make sure Urist McScutlabor is properly making blocks while Urist McAwesome is churning out masterwork tables in his own workshop.  Manager just slings jobs everywhere.

For using manager to cut gems... just select a few and hit R on one shop.  Then select a few more and hit R on another.... if one finishes before hte other just queue up a few more types on it.  Encrust jobs are a real pita though.

I've actually only used the manager once. Then I never used it again, because it infuriated me.

I use manager because the gem list is too darn long. Not just cut jobs, encrust jobs are also frustrating.
For example, I want to encrust some chests with different gems, I just create a stockpile which accepts only chests then type in something like "enc fur pink gar", enter, enter, "enc fur cry gla", enter, enter....

Well I use manager when I don't want to learn dfhack tricks (workflow for example). Sometimes when I play the game while doing other things, I just type in some jobs and let the game run on its own.

make 20 charcoals
collect 20 bags of sand
make 20 green glass spikes

etc

I use the q menu for everything but armour, because I got tired of counting how much armour I had.

No.
Maybe my workshops are too scattered. Too lazy to find them.

You have the stock screen. I usually lose count after a couple of production cycles...

I use the manager quiet extensively, it feels much more convenient and if a job gets cancelled for some silly reason, the manager will reassign the job for you.

Well, I've really gotten used to use the Manager as primary tool to organize my tasks. "Hey! We need doors!": Bam! 30 doors queued. "We need booze!": 30 brewing jobs queued! "We need clothes!": 10 Make shirts, 10 Make robes, 10 Make trousers, 10 Make socks, and so on, and so on, and repeat them two more times.

However, I realize that for those jobs that require a constant repeative flow of production, like: Make Charcoal, Brew Drink or Smelt hematite or whatever I need to do Ad eternum, is better to do what Cptn Kaladin Anrizlokum suggested: to execute that task manually from a workshop, and put it on Repeat, forever.

Although, you may want to resort to the Manager if you are dealing with very few resources and you want to manage them accordingly. :-\

If you have dfhack I believe you can adjust the job's material with alt-a such that it accepts any gem.

I think the ability to set a number when using the q menu for jobs would be nice, so you can designate a workshop to make 50 tables, and not have to fill the menu 5 times, or use the repeat function.

One more thing, the 30 job limit
why?

With the jeweller's workshop adding a simple cut gems that'll cut any gem & ignore stone would be great with me, that way I can just set it on repeat with out selecting every type.
