Russel carefully climbs into the hatch, and feels an old, frayed rope ladder on the wall. The descent is dangerous, terrifying, and long. After what Russel estimates to be five minutes of carefully navigating the maze of rotted ropes and false steps, he reaches the bottom. On the ground is a small lantern, engraved with archaic runes. He recognizes the relic, as he used to own one; it's a self-lighting lantern. Though most magical items have been broken due to few finding them and fewer still knowing how to keep them in good condition, the lanterns are simple and therefore sturdy. Placing one's hand on the bottom and speaking a command word, which is usually just "Light", will make a small spark, lighting the oil in the lantern. For more complex spells, one would need to know the word in Ferric, but the spell here is simple enough to work on intent rather than language.

Looking at it, it seems to be about half full, which should last for ~4 hours. However, the Gods only know when Russel will come across more oil, so after a quick test to ensure it still works, he blows out the light. Opening the door, a thin layer of dirty, almost black water floods in, and he can feel the air circulating, probably for the first time in centuries. This place seems oddly pure of the Fog; the hatch must have been sealed. Perhaps it hasn't reached all the way from Tyrrik to this part of the catacombs. Or perhaps the way has been sealed off; Russel would prefer not to think about that, since it means travelling all the way there through open land, exposed and ready to be eaten by any abomination that comes by.

Getting his first good look at the place, Russel notices the strange, amber-coloured stones embedded in the walls and ceiling (And possibly the floor, but it's covered by the muddy water). Each one seems to emit a dim, soft light, giving just enough to see by, but it's difficult. What you first took for an oddly shaped lump of stone in the corner begins to stand, revealing the figure of a large man, covered by thick and dirty cloaks. It speaks weakly and oddly.

"Be ye foe? Be ye friend? Or be ye Reaper?"

I'd rather be friend than foe but seems to me that choice is your's, friend?

"Good. Friendly faces are hard to find in Ferror, even before the Fog. I am Vrathul of the Golkaric family the Magi Pupilus, though I permit you to call me as you wish. Does your coming mean Ferror has been reclaimed?

Russel shakes his head and speaks sadly. "Afraid not. I have come to search for the source of the Fog, or at least to life my curse. Will you follow me?"

Vrathul says he will, though should Russel find the cure, he'll prefer to stay cursed. He explains that the curse, in addition to its better known effects, grants agelessness to those who can survive, and that he is so ancient that curing himself would likely lead to his death. Russel mentions that Vrathul called himself a Magi Pupilus, and asks if he can use magic. He says yes, and explains that he lived in the Kingdom of Ferror, before the Fog. He's managed to stay alive all these centuries by hiding, and blasting to oblivion anything that found him. Vrathul suggests they carry on before something comes across them, but first asks Russel if he has any more questions.

Tons of questions! How did the fog start? Any ideas how to lift it? Can you teach me magic?

"I can't say I know how it started, save that it was sudden and deadly. Most I knew died the day it fell. The rest died soon after. Even the Arch Magi couldn't hold the Demons rising from the unknowable aether for long. I've survived based on a mixture of luck and wit. The beasts seem to have grown considerably weaker after the initial attack, too. I can't say I would know how to lift the Fog, but the answer may lie in the Tower Meraic, home of the Lord of Ferror Tiranos the Scribe Acerbus.

As for teaching you magic, I am afraid I cannot. The Spark is within you, but it is weak- diluted through generations of remaining unused. I should think finding one capable of magic so long since the fall of Ferror will be extremely difficult, if not impossible. However, enough of the Spark remains within you to access the power in strong enchanted items. If you commit yourself to the study of them, and use them often, your descendants, be they your children or grandchildren or something more distant still, may be able to harness the art of Ferric magic once more."

You say the demons are weaker now, can you be more specific? What are their weak points? Are there any tricks to dealing with them?

We should move on soon. Can you lead me to this tower you spoke of?

((Well, I'm gonna try and revive this.))

"It's a little hard to say, exactly. But they lack in strength they once had. They die faster. The more powerful sorts are less common. As for tricks...Dire Wolves are dumb. They are quick to fall for a trap, and won't think twice about plunging their maw onto a blade.  Shrikes Cruor are much more clever, and faster. Do not fight one willingly, at least if you are not skilled in magic nor archery. But, should you manage to land a blow, they fall easily. Weakpoints...Most have thick hide; aim for their mouths, or other orifices. If you can get your hands on pure salt or silver, they can't stand that; it causes them intense pain, blistering, and with enough of it, death."

He agrees that moving on would be good. He sets off down a passageway, beckoning for you to follow. The corridor is winding, and narrow; keeping your sense of direction is hard, but if it doesn't deceive you, you enter a room from the west side, with a corridor leading to the north. You aren't alone here. From the muck in the room (Which has grown steadily deeper as you continue down the slowly declining hall) arise a pair of Warped; horribly twisted humans, their mouth split wide open, their teeth naturally sharpened to a point. Their nails have become claws, and their eyes show a horrid, unnatural hunger.

At once, the end of Vrathul's staff begins to glow a dim green; he pulls a large crystal from his side, which begins to pulse a sort of cyan.

"You lead; I will follow. You are, after all, the one with a close ranged weapon."

Level the spear and move between Varthul and the mutants. "I'll hold them up while you magic them"

The first Warped charges at you predictably, though ducks at the last second before he would have hit your spear. Reacting quickly, you manage to kick it aside, dazing the thing. It's still alive, though, and begins standing. The other one is less reckless; it appears to be biding its time, waiting for the right moment to strike.

Unfortunately for it, the time doesn't come faster than Vrathul's powers.

At once, the strange man begins speaking something under his breath.
"Tri ur-ihur!
As the final syllable is spoken, a great tongue of orange flame leaps from the tip of his staff. In one smooth motion, he levels it, and thrusts the crystal forward, projecting the tongue of flame into the beast. Despite the immaterial nature of the flame, it seems to almost punch through the beast, in addition to searing it. At once, the Warped falls to the ground. It appears to try and stand once, before it accepts its fate and simply stops moving. You give another thrust of your spear, and slay the other.

It would appear that one of the Warped was carrying a satchel with it.
