How does the Claim System work?
« on: December 21, 2014, 07:43:46 pm »

What it says in the title.

What can I do with the claim system? Can I start my own empire? Will people go to war against me?

You become the lord of a group that attemptws to gain control of a site. If you successfully gain control the only thing that will happen is the site ownership changes. You can control multiple sites, though it will be under different groups and I think if you retire you end up losing control of sites you didn't retire in. The civilization that owns the site still owns the site even if you're from a different civilization.

Its a feature. Impregnating booze is a planned tech tree for dwarves and this is a sneak peek at it.
Unless you're past reproductive age. Then you're pretty much an extension of your kids' genitalia

Actually that's sort of not true. What we found in the Species Wars succession fort/adventure competition thread is that the the sites that have been taken over no longer count as possible 'home' sites for new adventurers of that civilization. Also if you're starting a new fortress for that civilization the sites that have been taken over no longer show up on the world map as part of that civilization.
The legends xml data is incomplete, so utilities like LegendViewer report conflicting data.

I was wondering this too.
Could I find a small hamlet, kill all the occupants, and claim it as my own?
If so, that would be badass.

If you kill _everyone_ I'm not sure you can claim it successfully afterwards, because there's nobody to claim it from.

There's nobody to dispute the claim, however.

oh yeah. I did it in the aforementioned Species War. I claimed the site just fine and then my adventurer moved there and kept ruling. You don't have to claim the site from someone, just go to the mead hall and shout. Even if no one else is around to hear you it still counts as a claim to the site, and since there's no one to oppose you, you win by default.

I want to make a stealthy adventurer, find a good hamlet, sneak into it at night, strangle all the occupants (so as not to get blood all over my soon-to-be home) dump all their bodies into the nearest river, and then claim the hamlet as my own. I can then turn it into a base of operations for my adventurer and any future adventurers. After a successful raid, I'll haul all my newfound goodies back there. I can set up an armory in one house, and a food supply in another. I used to do something similar to this using what I called "safehouses," which were abandoned shops in big towns where I'd store my adventurer's stuff when I didn't need it.

You only have to claim the site and kill (or run out of town) the current owner in order for the site to officially become yours. The population will still belong to to the group that owned the town before you. Telling them that you've killed their old leader and asking them to join your new group usually fixes that. Or you can kill everyone. That's faster. ;D

Vaguely reminds me of that first Dark Brotherhood thing in Skyrim where you had to figure out which of the three people was guilty and kill them.
(I killed all three. Every time.)

Also, if you ever figure out why poets/bards/dancers just randomly start butchering people/getting butchered, please don't fix it, I love never knowing when a dance party will turn into a slaughter.

You can do that. But best not to unretire it afterwards.
