Dwarven Justice - Useful for Weeding out the Panzies
« on: January 04, 2016, 11:40:18 am »

So I'm on fort 16 for the new version (been experimenting) and this fort is the first one with real happiness problems. A bunch of keas attacked the trade depot with the dwarf caravan there and a marksdwarf caravan gaurd shot them down. This of course caused the conflict bad thought blah blah.

Normally I would try and help the unhappy dwarves, but 40.xx got me used to some of them just being depressed. I would try to cheer them up but if they are stress prone there is no hope.

I usually don't use a sheriff because I ignore production orders. However, it occured to me that I could get rid of these dwarfs with some beatings. There had not been production violations yet so I made a sheriff and also made him the hammerer. I put 5 chains in my temple between the dance floor and the coffins. I convicted the dwarves of one crime a piece. Then let the stressed dwarves rack up some more violations by attacking praying dwarfs. I then convicted them of all their crimes. Once their sentence is up they recieved thier steel hammer beating which ended it.

Of course their coffin was 2 tiles away and most dwarves got a happy thought for having seen justice done. For those that didn't... well dwarven justice is certainly efficient.

I know I could drown them or what have you but this way is more hands off for me, and has a good chance of producing happy thoughts. Also, it hardens up your general populace.

Does anyone else do this?

The beatings will continue until morale improves.

Absolutely, and so far it is working. The fort was on its way to a tantrum spiral and now it is holding steady. I expect the overall morale to increase over the next year barring any huge catastophe. Also, before you think my plan is simply to beat the dwarfs into submission I am also improving overall living conditions by adding statues everywhere and communal cabinets to bunk houses. I'm also making new clothes and cloth trinkets for dwarves to acquire.

I made the post mostly because I was surprised how effective public floggings and excutions are in game. I seem to recall this solution being bad in versions before this one. Admitingly I don't think I've used the justice system since I think 31.xx

So are you getting any statues of convicted dwarves getting beaten to death?

Have them killed. Nothing solves a problem quite as effectively as simply having it killed.

I'm not usually a fan of avoidable dwarf deaths, but this really sounds like Dwarven Justice doing it's job.  Well done.

Thanks, also these deaths aren't really avoidable the dwarves in question had huge stress vulnerability and were going to go insane soon. In fact before figuring this out a beserk dwarf beat the mayor to death in his own office.

Some dwarves you just can't save unless you caught them from the get go and micromanage their activity. They all also had the depressed for missing family thought.

With this application of the justice system at least some good can come of their deaths.

To khearn: Ya a few of them are. This world only has 50 years of base history because of megabeast deaths so the pool of inspirational historical events is small. Basically, alot of my statues are of gods, the founding of my fort, and for some reason mollusks (odd because my blacksmith has no preferences or dislikes toward mollusks, maybe a relative or friend likes/hates them).

Edit: It just occurred to me that these mollusk statues might make the problem worse for mollusk hating dwarves. I better investigate.

I'm having trouble using dwarven justice to manipulate my dwarves in my current fort. For some reason my dwarves keep electing a no demand mayor, and I'm suffering from the bug where my fort isn't being raised to a barony, so I can't appoint a baron that will issue mandates.

But I don't tend to use justice for killing my dwarves. Nah. It's better used on dwarves that need a happiness boost. Being released after a sentence used to be a good boost in previous version, not sure if it still is. That, and luxury prison cells.

You don't need mandates for the justice system to work. Any crime will be reported to your sheriff and you can convict whatever dwarf you want of the crime. Though there will be witness accounts that point you toward the culprit. Assault, destruction of fortress property, and general vandalism like toppling (but not destroying) statues can land a dwarf in jail.

The release from jail thought is not enough to counteract all the unmet needs thoughts that happen to a dwarf in jail. If the sentence is longer than 50 days or so then the dwarf will have negative thoughts related to worshiping and socializing amongst other things. Especially if that dwarf is already stressed.

I've never been able to get my dwarves unhappy enough to do any form of crime, so I do need those mandates haha.

@martinuzz: You can manually replace the mayor to one more to your liking (I do that explicitly to get a non mandating one). This will have to be redone every summer, as the previously elected candidate probably will be elected again, and thus has to be replaced. You may, of course, have qualms about interfering with dwarven democracy.

Have you considered creating a 'jail church' that by means of barring entry to the 'cells' via solid obstacles (walls etc) each inmate can recieve a 1x1 private general prayer space around the chained area (with a bed, food and booze hatch for dropping supplies above) by forbidding the entrance to it, as well as drawing in the local populace to witness dwarven justice though windowed cells. As to socialising you could make a similar setup (im sure that they'll listen and tell stories how they done their terrible deeds to every female in the vicinity named 'Clarice')

Thinking hannibal lectdwarf here.
