Sewers blocked

How can I get any further into a sewer? Beyond a certain point, there is not "Open Space" above the water, and I start "Drowning". If I get a high enough swimming skill, can I swim through that, or is it just impossible? I have a quest in there, so that's why I want to know.

Sewers are kind of buggy/fiddly iirc.
You may not be able to get in.

Thanks. I guess I'd better find a different place to quest-search, as EVERY SINGLE QUEST I GET is in the inaccessible sewer. How annoying.

In the most recent versions, the bandits, vamps, etc seem to tend to be in the catacombs, not the dungeon under the keep or the rather inaccessible sewers.  Go to a church.
