So a tribe of plump helmet men pathed from cavern two all the way into my fortress, meandered around there for a bit, then pathed up to my front door, into the overworld, and off the map.

What just happened?

...In a more serious tone, I believe it's related to when I had the merchants decide to leave not by the usual path, but through the fort, leading their beasts of burden, and leaving the carts behind (Although it took me a season and a half to realise that this had happened, funnily enough) and wandering down through the first set of caverns, to a path to the second set of caverns, then off the map. I am told that "They probably saw it as a faster path off the map" which is odd, as the trade depot wasn't even indoors that year.

I got the same thing, more or less, with jaguar men/women.

They exist above ground, but tend to path inside my fort for whatever reason.
Noone minds them, except the dogs.

I remember an aboveground fort I once ran that had fairly friendly relations with the local flying squirrel people. They'd drift through town every so often, hang out around the public park, then leave after a little while. I even held the door open for a few of them when they were running from angry goblins. None of the dwarves seemed to mind their presence, though they spooked the village cats. I never got to formalize the partnership before they met a tragic end, cut down to a squirrel man by the human caravan guards. Incidentally, that was the only time I ever attacked a caravan for any reason other than desperation for supplies. I still feel justice has been served.
