I'll go ahead and put a games index in the OP. I've also set up a larger 12-slot public game with moderately different rules, and there are a couple public games with a few slots left that look interesting which I'll link to as well.

I'm being massively outclassed, so I'm gonna drop out of the first game. Good luck guys.

Yeah, you had pretty poor luck with the spawn. S'why I made the second game a circular galaxy. That still has spots open, by the by.

well i have a similiar problem as werty, my planets are too far apart so im stuck waiting for higher hyperspace range. But in any case i will continue, maybe there is something good coming out of this...

Mm, you do have a moderately better situation, though. For the time being you're out of range of everyone else and can eco hard, and later on you'll be able to grab up a lot of that real estate in the galactic north for safe eco/defense in depth.

That said, game 2. Circular galaxy.

Also 32 player games, because they're so hectic that it matters more who you ally with than where you start.

There's still space left in both Game 2 (the private B12 one) and the Galactic Free For All (the 32 player public one).

Cross all your appendages and pray for a good starting spot if you have dark start, check the map for the best remaining if you don't.  :P

Experimental tech and industry are both much more effective if you invest in them early. Don't fall behind in the lab-count creep. Set up tech trades with someone on the other side of the galaxy. If you can go back-to-back with someone while leaving room for both of you to expand in different directions, ally with them. Case in point for the last:

Yeah, from my observations, the general rule of thumb for tech priorities is

USEFUL EARLY:
Experimentation
Scanning
Hyperspace

USEFUL ENTIRE:
Weapons
Manufacturing
Terraforming

NICE TO HAVE, NEVER DEDICATE RESEARCH:
Banking

In the early game, Those 3 techs will allow you to best obtain new tech and expand to the best planets. Hyperspace range is only useful to a certain extent, though it allows you to bypass alliance chokepoints if you are looking for a good backstab. Scanning generally is also not as useful, but that is only because after a certain point it only warns you which areas are especially guarded.

The rest of the game is pretty much dominated by how well you can produce ships and invade rivals. In this case, Weapons make you ships count for more, Terraforming reduces prices so you can expand your industry and economy, and Manufacturing boosts the productivity of your existing industry.

Banking is nice to have, but just isn't worth the research points like the other techs.

Mm, I'd say that banking is worthwhile if you're trapped in a corner with basically no good stars, but are not being actively attacked. Terraforming can only do so much if you've got almost nothing but those <10 resource dustballs.

I'd also argue that Scanning and Range are actually more useful than Weapons in anything but a chokepoint slugfest/a situation where you have superior numbers, because they make it much easier for you to fight a stronger opponent by way of avoiding their big fleets except when you can fight decisive defensive battles, while also allowing you to safely backcap things and force them to withdraw. That only works with large, sprawling borders, though. If you're stuck between a couple big, nasty empires, your safe bet is to turtle and grind nothing but Weapons and Manu while trying to find a trade partner elsewhere. Anyone will hesitate to attack even a tiny little power if they've got 2k ships, equivalent Weapons tech, and are clearly planning to bleed whoever jumps on them first.
