"It is a tad strange, though, this single-mindedness you speak of. What do the priests even believe in?"

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

"Ah that it may be, but please do not bring it up this close to the wall. We won't get in trouble or anything, but I might get funny looks for a while if anyone hears you talking like that. Our scripture is old and detailed, with additions added after each great flood. Stripping it to the bare bones, it is about the gods of this valley. Long ago, the people here where wanderers. The world back then was even more dangerous to travel than it is now, so death and despair where common. Then, one day, the people found a series of fertile hills. The god of this valley came to greet them, coming from their homes in the river and beneath the hills. They said our people will live happily there, as long as we are good and just, and gave us a set of rules to live by. The first kingdom began living dutifully by these rules, and everyone was happy and prosperous. Eventually, however, they turned there backs on the rules and had to be punished by the gods, who flooded the valley. The church was formed then, after the first flood, in an attempt to keep the country compliant with these rules. Of course, every hundred years on the dot it seems that we lost our way again, and another great flood came over us, taking more of the fertile land we where promised and replacing it with water. Each time the priests would find what we did wrong that time and remove it, promising to never do it again, becoming new scripture. I hope that answered your question..."

A strange smile appears on the guards face.

"Seven, the famous Seven Floods. It was almost one hundred years ago. To be exact It will be a hundred years in three days. This ceremony was made after the last flood, after all. You came on a good year, it is the hundredth time we are doing it."

"When was the last flood before that, if I may ask?"

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

You hack open the can with the can opener of a multiknife and quickly swallow its contents, salty tasting meat sludge with the consistency of tuna fish. Full of protein, low in fat, and cheap. Anyone who eats it feels the desire to drink copious amounts of water, which you proceed to do. Somehow after you eat that stuff, even the water tastes salty. In any case, you're no longer hungry. You return to your vehicle and retrace your steps, back to the crossroads, then toward the distant mountains.

The new road contains more turns then even the old one, narrowing and widening at arbitrary intervals as it snakes steadily toward the mountains. It continuously gains altitude as it does so, ever so slightly dragging you up. Sometimes it seems to change into a footpath, your wheels digging into the still wet sides of the road, while other times you have enough room for three more ATVs to pass easily. Of course, always in your vision is the green mountains in the distance, getting closer and closer as the world gets darker and darker.

As the sun finally sets behind them, you arrive at the foot of the mountains.

What is the difference between dead and rotten and lost and forgotten for a forum post?

----------------------

"One hundred years. The one before that was another hundred. So on and so forth."

The guard sighs, lowering his voice even more.

"I know what you are thinking. I'm thinking the same thing too. I was once a wander like you, and settled here long ago. Maybe this time will be different. I wracked my brain trying to figure out how I could warn everyone without being called out for blasphemy. I couldn't think of anything. I tried to think of a way to just save my family, but my wife laughed at all attempts to leave for the festival. In the end, the only person I would be able to save was myself. And what would that do? My faith isn't strong, but I do believe in the same thing as the rest of my people. The other floods victims really did deserve it, the schools here have history classes even for adults that prove so. Maybe the gods really did kill them off, just waiting a hundred years to do so. If not, then I will spend one last night with my wife and kids, happily enjoying our last moments until the end. Feel free to save yourselves, strangers, by all means leave just before the festival starts. But please don't try anything stupid. The best you could hope to accomplish is ruin everyone's last happy moments."

Any details you want to add to your camp, such as a tent or fire? Or do you wish to simply sleep in your vehicle?
