Cage them and release them next time the goblins come to town.  As a bonus, you can tan them afterwards for some boots!

Nice! I never seem to be able to catch the things, so I, too, am jealous of your good fortune. Now if only dwarves could ride mounts. Excelsior! Smoke me a cave lobster, I'll be back by morning!

What's all this silliness with locked doors and forbidden eggs? Just remove eggs from your food stockpiles and remove the cook setting in the kitchen menu.

With locked doors, you can (a) still have delicious eggs from some egg-laying animals of a given species while still breeding others, and (b) use this fact for selective breeding purposes. Few traits are heritable, but size, fat, and musculature seem to be--which means you can eventually have your war cave crocs all be huge, muscular and fat. And why wouldn't you want that?

Edit: Note to self: Seriously, edit first, then post.

When I'm breeding stuff I just forbid the nest box.  Use 't' to see the building contents and 'f'orbid the nest box.  The animals will still lay in it, but dwarves won't steal the eggs.

I just noticed that 226 cave croc pets may cause a bit of lag.

Not if you cage them at birth.

I'm wondering if alligators may be just as viable. Unlike cave crocs, they only take one year to mature. Sure they're not quite as large and don't lay quite as many eggs, but they still have a decent value multiplier and honestly 30 eggs is a lot anyways.

They're also harder to find than cave crocs. You can just open up a cavern anywhere from a glacier to a sandy desert and there's a chance of finding cave crocs, while alligators only show up aboveground in certain biomes.

Additionally, cave crocs are 50% larger than alligators. Alligators are 400,000 cm3, cave crocs are 600,000 cm3. The only big predatory water reptile that's bigger is the saltwater crocodile at 800,000 cm3.
