I somehow imagine all your dwarves running around in crocodile leather boots and hats and having an Australian accent.

And don't forget to have them play some rousing games of knifey spooney.

Anyways sounds like your fortress needs a moat to drop enemies and undesirables into. Get some war training into those critters, sit back and enjoy! Just remember to keep some around for spawning purposes.

I now have an urge to import a few - but my War Lion industry is doing so well it may have to wait.

Besides, war lions.

It requires a breeding pair of crocs.  Trap them and train them or buy them from traders.

It then needs a nestbox since crocs lay eggs, so set up a pen/pasture for them that contains nestboxes.  Watch like a hawk, dwarves will grab the eggs the moment they are laid and take them to a food stockpile.  forbid the door to the room or forbid the eggs themselves as they are laid.  As long as you have both male and female in the fort then eggs ought to usually be fertile, occasionally they jsut wont hatch.  But 3 months later should be hatchling time.

Crocs lay 20-60 eggs each, per clutch.  Crocsplosion

Catch a male and female cave croc in the caverns with cage traps. Tame them until you know they won't forget their training or go wild, pasture the female over a nest box and lock the door so dwarves won't collect the eggs. Several months later, enjoy the influx of adorable babeh crocs. Repeat until you're drowning in crocodiles. (ninja'd by celem)

Cave crocs are indeed awesome, OP. Sadly, I've never had a fortress get a breeding pair. They're, like, my ideal fortress pet. Tons for war, hunting, random pets, lots of eggs, lots of hatchlings to breed and butcher, good size for war, they're perfect. I'm mildly jealous.

Alright, cool. Thank you very much :) Crocs seem like a good way to stem whatever eventually rampages through my fortress.

What's all this silliness with locked doors and forbidden eggs? Just remove eggs from your food stockpiles and remove the cook setting in the kitchen menu.

I liked putting nest boxes in their own 1x1 rooms behind a locked door. That way I can have lots of nest boxes outside in a general area for my dwarves to harvest. If I don't want the animals behind the locked doors to breed anymore, just unlock the doors. Way less micromanagement than making sure every stockpile for food has eggs disabled, and it lets my dwarves eat all the excess eggs. With a cave croc breeding program with more than 1 female you're gonna have a lot of excess eggs really fast.

Locked rooms and forbidden eggs are much better. After all, you don't need many breeders, and eggs are better than meat for cooking. Plus kitchen menu is nasty.

I just noticed that 226 cave croc pets may cause a bit of lag.
