The magic isn't even significant and the story line doesn't affect the game
I can't seem to get it through that this is outside of the story line
It's like traveling back and doing it different from x point in history

Here's a thought:
He could make a dedicated thread linking to all of the games, with a rough placement on a timeline when each takes place.  A link in the OP could be a notice that the game takes place in the same universe, but besides that, nothing else outside of that is mentioned about the universe as a whole.  That way, those who just want the game don't have to deal with the universe, but those who are interested in it can go to the dedicated thread and discuss it there.
