The Ranger
« on: December 20, 2013, 02:35:20 pm »

Nearly 2 years since I last played dwarf fortress.

In these 2 years, I don't think I've played a game that gives quite the adventuring feel like this mode does.

I've read the wiki, not much seems to have changed except the fact you need to eat and you cant throw the world into submission anymore.

Now last time I went off on an adventure I got my insides splattered across 3 kingdoms, I've but a few questions to ask before I go get myself killed on a merry trip.

As the subject says, I'm thinking of going for a ranger adventurer.

Bow&Arrows, this was kinda outclassed by throwing last I played but I want to try it again.
Thing is, I wonder if a 1-handed sword or 2-handed one would make a better combo.

If I can equip a 1-hander and a bow at the same time, that saves me precious time. The reload is long enough without having to put the bow away and pull out a greatsword every time I go in melee

No shield, my hands are already full (I think) so I will be training dodging a whole lot.

Since I'll be relying on the dodging skill, I need to be fast : No plate armor, heaviest armor I would wear is chainmail.

All the other skills related to a lightly equipped/sneaky/mostly ranged character will be trained but do you guys thing a set up like this is... viable?

No shield

... viable?
No. Well, you may get lucky for awhile, but you're pretty much doomed, unless you become a Husk or maybe vampire.  A mod for less overpowered ranged weapons could help you some, as well. Then again, almost anything is viable if your Sneaking skill is high enough. I'd go with one-handed melee weapon, I've heard about attack penalties to using Multigrasp weapons with one hand, and if you're gonna survive without a shield you'll want a high hit rate towards feet and legs. Stab always.

I found a human city named Sleevevirgins. It was easily the biggest city in the world, so clearly I wasn't the first person to come inside the city's walls.

pretty sure armor won't affect your dodging if you have a decent enough amount of armor skill.

honestly though,if you play your adventurer like you say you will, then your adventurer will have his face lying down in his own blood with 4 arrows in his chest

Go either 100% light dodger or 100% armoured tank. Anything between isn't enough. Armor affects enormously to dodging, since it's taken from agility and speed, and armor usually slows characters down enormously. With more weight you have less time to dodge and less time to strike. Good armor using skill helps to negate this effect.

I'd pair a bow with shield and when entering to melee, (r)emove sword from your backpack to your hand. You could also drop your bow after that. Removing doesen't take ticks to do, and that way you can have sword, bow and shield same time.

Short swords and scimitars are really just for roleplaying. Currently there is no much difference between weights of swords, and you can wield two-handed sword with one hand just fine.

Sneaking skill will be your top priority, among with dodging, shield using and archery. Good tactic is to sneak around, shoot while undetected, take sword and finish wounded opponents off.

If your aim is to be as light as can be, play with elf and drop your backpack always before a fight. I've slaughtered succesfully everything with naked elf-maiden by sneaking and shooting, and then cutting throats with secondary weapon.

anyway I advise that you take things nice and slow get yourself a full set of heavy armor, you should end up with 600 speed, sneak around from place to place until your sneaking skill reaches around master skill, then wreastle with the nearst harmless critter,go prone, dump your shield and weapon*,and spam . for a while until the creature is exausted then kill it and find another, rinse and repeat, when you reach legendary armor skill do the same thing again execpt don't drop your shield, this techniqe also trains dodging skill at a reasonable pace, congrats you now have 3 layers of defence, first the enemy has to try and hit you, then the enemy has try get past your shield, then the enemy has to penetrate your armour enough to do more damage then 'tearing the muscle',training attacking skill is a bit harder, try to find a wooden weapon for melee,as for your bow...I can't offer advice for that,I reccommend training weapon skill on creature's like boars and camels. Also after all this you should sneak until you are at legendary skill,I once had a great character but I was confidant that I was invincable** to bandits so I never sneaked after a while and I paid for it,I took an arrow to the knee and a mace*** to the face.

* your counter attacks will be less deadly this way

** thanks to a lord that refused to give me a quest to slay a titan or at least a cyclops

*** bout 50 mace strikes to be correct, don't look at me like that I broke something in modding and humans ended up with steel armor

Actually 2-handed weapons wielded with 1 hand bring attack penalties.
If you train your weapon skill high enough, you will bat arrows out of the air with your weapon.
ALWAYS wear a helmet.
