jeez, I have never encountered more than like 15 z-levels down on a natural, non-modded, or custom genned game, that's insane!

Well, if you embark on a site that has sea level ground, and a mountain that's 35 Z's high, navigating to under the mountain's peak on the sea level Z will mean you're already at -35, and the caverns can typically be unseen til -25, so that's -60 already.
