Looks good. I see some really interesting things happening if you (or anyone) somehow manage(s) to mobilize your school in whatever wars pop up. Should be fun.
Just a heads-up-- The tanto is a knife, mechanically speaking. I don't know why this is, because every source I've found agrees with you that it's a shortsword. That's just the way L5R works, I guess. I don't think this will be an actual problem for you, I just wanted to forewarn you that it's governed by an unexpected skill. That skill being knives. Obviously.

I should point out that I'm ok with the school being as it is, giving the anachronism of the setting. Largely schools are temples or certain ways of life, espousing a particular philosophy and point of view that a Samurai is inducted to, grows up within, and owes loyalty to. This is why your unmodified starting honor comes from your school. They normally won't be schools in the traditional sense as we know them, and, save for Ronin who still likely trained with or under another Ronin, most unclanned characters (particularly peasants) who are traditionally schooled in some way would be monks or something of the sort. It would be rare, perhaps even taboo, for a samurai to leave in order to train at a different school. That being said, I'm cool with it and it stands to reason that a long time ago, some upjumped peasant started a school or something; Ever since, peasants have been sort of learning the style he invented.

Spoiler: Some tentative fluff about Shin San'in Hekireki School (click to show/hide)

Shin San'in Hekireki School, as its name implies, was a descent from the San'in Hekireki School, which is in turn a branch of the San'in School, and ultimately from the Yamanaka School. Legends said that the founder of Yamanaka School, Yamanaka Jirogoro Iemoto 山中 次郎五郎 家本, was travelling around cities and started dueling with numerous commoners, and later bushi and samurai, without losing any of them. His favoured weapon is the Staff, and this alone has attracted attention from the then very progressive lord, Yamane Motoharu 山根 本春. Motoharu was already famous with various weapons, but Jirogoro got the upper hand on the Staff, no matter what weapon Motoharu was on. Impressed, he sponsored Jirogoro to start a School, and bestowed the name Yamanaka Iemoto onto Jirogoro. Soon his retainers and peasants are mandated to be trained under Yamanaka principles, and he won numerous battles, with opponents noting the strength and ruggedness of the long staff.

However, once Iemoto died, his two sons saw his father's work differently, and this lead to the schism into the Sanyo and San'in schools, The Sanyo school eventually transformed into a kata-based skill, and found its way among courtesans and city guards alike. The San'in school retained much of the practical character, and added the Tanto into the mix "because everyone need to defend himself in any situation". The San'in Hekireki School was an offshoot to counter the fact that spears are becoming longer and longer, and decided to adopt the spear as the field weapon, focusing on cutting up the other spears. Meanwhile the staff is still the personal weapon, and the tanto as the weapon of last resort. The Shin San'in Hekireki School mainly differed in weapon designs and a few set pieces, but can be seen as a close relative of the old San'in Hekireki school.

So while its beginnings are humble, and certainly retained humble weapons, The school does have its prestige and no Samurai would feel ashamed to announce.

Just assume he got some basic education in Sojutsu so he has no problem to adapt. If you got a much more prestigious master, and you are of some social status (as opposed to commoner/Kokujin), people should be flexible enough for exceptions.
Yes, Tanto. The School tries to cover every range in battle: Yari in Formation, Staff instead of Swords in closer quarters, and tanto as last resort. Its peasant origins eschews the use of long blades.
I thought if you guys really hate my character, I would just translate him into a warrior monk.

Whelp. Hmmm...I think I know what kind of character I'd like to play, mostly because almost everyone is currently a samurai. I'd rather be something a bit...countering. I'm guessing and hoping there are rules for ninja.
