Duex questions.
« on: November 24, 2007, 09:11:00 pm »

I've started on a volcanic island, perhaps..my dream island. There was a lovely cave where theres about 40 dwellers of ironmen, antment, trogs, and a lovely ettin. On the edges of my paradise we're native slugmen. The problem was when I started to make stockpiles. My so brave dorfs who seemed to be scared off by a trog, where almost ecstatic to gather materials deep into the Z-levels of the dangerous cave. Infact making a graveyard made things even worse. A dead antmen was in the first corridor, and my dwarves saw fit to drag it into the graveyard; he was then molested by several antment and ironmen..then my other dwarves soon followed.

I need to know how to forbid entrance into this cave. That resitrcted traffic thing didn't work.

And I need to know if i'll get migrants on an island.

You could always rewall to block off the entrance.  Unfortunately, you'd probably be spammed with canceled job messages.  I'm not sure if it's possible, but have you tried forbidding the corpses?  Forbidden objects are ignored by the dwarves.  Examine the object with [k] and hit [f] to forbid.

As for immigration, it depends on whether dwarves are able to get to it.  When you select your location, you can tab through various screens.  One of them tells you which civilizations you have contact with.  If dwarves is on the list, you will get traders and immigrants.  If humans and/or elves are on the list, you will get traders from those civilizations.  If goblins are on the list, you will get sieges.

You need to use "forbidden" on all the items in the cave, by entering [d]esignate>[f]orbidden . The Traffic Density controls are best used to keep someone from passing through an area if they have a choice, while Forbid prevents Dwarves from taking jobs for a specific item.

As for island immigrants, there seems that there are the occasional immigrants. Presumably, they get there the first 7 did. The only way to tell if you will or won;t get visitors is if there are any known Dwarven civs in the [c]iv menu.

You could just make a locked door sealing off the way in. It shouldn't result in spammed messages, at least not more than one or two (dwarves won't form new jobs for unaccessible items, so it'll just cancel the jobs that are already in progress).
