Short of breath. Asthma?
« on: November 10, 2012, 05:53:30 pm »

For the past hour I've been breathing, but I don't feel like I'm breathing in enough, even when I breath as much and as hard as I can. This has happened before and It's getting worrysome. My mom smokes, but whenever she's nearby I get away from the smoke whenever I can. Am I getting Asthma or something?

Do you live near any hydraulic fracturing operations or coal plants? Those can raise asthma rates in an area above to 50%.

Not that I know of. There's a nuclear power plant at least 20-30 miles away, though.

No, nuclear plants don't cause asthma. Their emissions are just water vapor.

Maybe you should just go to a doctor.

Yeah, I sincerely agree with the idea of going to a doctor and seeing if you have asthma. Asthma is no joke, coming from someone who's had it for most of my life and with moments where it was very bad. Also, do you have any allergies? Allergies can be a serious trigger for asthma, and getting allergy shots can be extremely helpful in relieving asthma (even though getting a shot every week for a considerable length of time is not very enjoyable, I'll admit, though the shots get less frequent later on). I'm on the tail end of my allergy shots and I haven't had any serious asthma attacks in at least two or so years.

the trembling hands is you panicking about it, the shortness of breath is likiely mild asthma, which is being made worse by you panicking.  You are giving yourself a panick attack and need to just calm down for a bit.  Then go to a doctor later, the main thing is calm down right now however you can man :)

Well, considering that right now I'm playing Baystation 12 and I was randomly told I was a traitor...that may be hard.

I have asthma, and this has happened to me a couple times.  The hands thing is probably from you hyperventilating.  Sometimes, if I try to overcompensate because I think I'm not getting enough air, that'll happen.  I almost passed out once, until someone calmed me down.
If this happens again, make sure to let someone near you know you're having trouble breathing.  Then, slowly breathe in through your nose, and out your mouth.  If you feel like you're not getting enough air, don't try to breathe faster, that won't help.
But do go to a doctor to get tested.  If you do have asthma, you're going to need an inhaler.
You may have gotten it from your mom's smoking, but there are factors other than environmental.
