Given a 3-wide hallway, setting up a dwarfwash is pretty simple.  Start by digging a channel in the middle tile:

Code: [Select]
##########
..........
....v.....   Channel one tile, creating ramp on the level below.
..........
##########

Now designate the channel as a pond, and wait for dwarves to fill it with buckets of water.  They will stop filling it when it reaches 6/7.  Remove the pond designation once that happens.

Finally, channel the two adjacent tiles:

Code: [Select]
##########
....v.....
....v.....
....v.....
##########

The 6/7 water will spread out and become three tiles of 2/7 water.  It will never need to be replaced or maintained -- dwarves walk through it and come out clean.  Occasionally, dwarves may clean the contaminants from the wet tiles, if it's dug into stone and not soil.

The same design works for a 2-wide hallway as well -- the 6/7 water will spread into two tiles of 3/7 water, which works exactly the same way.  For a 4-wide or larger hallway, you'd need a different design (I'd dig and fill two ponds).

It doesn't have to be at the entrance to your fortress.  You can put these in any high-traffic areas (like the hallway leading to the booze, or the statue garden, or the bedrooms).
