I guess also what would you wanna do in your spare time? You can't drink ALL the time, or even if you could, you might not want to just sit around in a dining hall while drunk and nothing else....
Train up the young fighters. Sleep in a cozy bed. Drink and eat the good stuff. Get handsy with the other dwarves. Help build the perimeter defenses. Make some badass weapons and armor. Dig a pit, and trench it out away from the fort, running an artificial waterfall into it for a makeshift shower/bath house.  Make an Artifact. Trade with the Humans and possibly the Elves (if we need wood or cloth, they're actually useful.) Wander around an enclosed "museum" full of artifacts in display cases and platinum and marble statues.

Look at the animals in a zoo, would be one thing.  Socialize with the other dwarves in statue gardens, or dining halls.  The dwarves also have the ability to create instruments and sew art together.  Perhaps look at engravings from some of the more skilled engravers and judge their work.  Other dwarves themselves would create art for fun instead of just making stuff to ship to the caravans constantly.

If more than necromancers could write books, or perhaps a library for the nerdier dwarves...

Good points.

The notion of libraries and books could create a few industries I guess and wouldn't be a bad way to go overall. Same idea with perhaps a theater or something, I dunno. The notion of entertainment industries seems to make some sense. Same goes music. Also I guess you could have engravings and that those wouldn't necessarily have to be attached to anything. You could have the idea of something on little plates or slabs or something (little free, non attached slates of stone). Even if things were attached to walls/floors/ceilings, you could have it so they can be put on/taken off with a little work. (modular tiles that attach to and come off from the walls.

I suppose martial arts/training physical skills might be interesting. The notion could be gyms and / or something along the lines of a practice area both for individual practices, groups and for sparing (classes etc). Quite frankly, there could be all sorts of classes on that, etc, etc, etc.

There could also be social clubs I guess, though what you do there who really knows. What do dwarves talk about? Different types could include something like a public/semi private bath? I dunno maybe it'd be more like a spa. You could also just have a bunch of tables sitting around and people playing cards, or little ... board games? I guess? Maybe they'd put together little stone puzzles. Same idea with watching performances like theater I guess (it isn't like there's TV or anything). Presumably these could also have zoo areas and or aquariums lining the walls or as little centerpieces etc. You'd also have like, I guess little public areas you could hang out on, the equivalent of dwarven street corners, but classy, like an Italian one. It might be kinda like how lots of places in Italy have statues and fountains in public like that (maybe not necessarily fountains etc, but yeah.... Little built in seating on certain wide areas of tunnels/streets?

All of this might presuppose infrastructure systems and dwarves to manage them: cleaning/refuse, plumbing/water, etc. Though to a certain extent, in theory if people were considerate, we couldn't have to necessarily have other people clean up after them, etc. This is one of the areas, I really hope Dwarves surpass humans in....

Hum, I'm trying to figure out how a dwarven social club would work out. You'd have location as a concern, sure. Then there'd be what was actually in the various little areas of the social club itself. I mean, any kind of bath or spa place has serious infrastructure concerns. Basically water control and presumably water heating. You're talking some sort of stove/furnace or ... something that would make water hot/warm. Quite frankly, magma is, once again, the answer to dwarven problems concerning heating, but yeah, that might not be feasible in this case. Fireplaces with chimney vents aren't out of the question. The romans actually had a few interesting heating ideas, from a research point of view on heating places. It wouldn't necessarily have to be a waterfall (and in game terms that'd be less FPS drain). I don't think Dwarves would object o soaking in a hot tub of water sipping some booze, perhaps even socially (small or large groups I guess).

I like the idea of a statue garden, but also I think it doesn't really have to be necessarily just one place all about statues. Look at some of the neat italian statues that are all over the public places. You could do that. Same thing with working stuff into various locations all over the dwarven city. I mean there's nothing to say that it can't, is there? Maybe it's just me; I dunno.

So I dunno. At some point, you'd have to ideally consider what a bunch of Dwarves would do both in their work hours and their off hours. It's a lovely thing about not having to worry about automation etc, because then you can actually just look at how the people deal with their time etc.

Avalum: Male Dwarven, Book binder.

Work Hours: Picks up deliveries of paper and book bindings, drops them off at binder's guild, Pens various books and records, Binds various books and records. Files and archives various books/ editions. Delivers reports to government and administrative offices.

After Work Hours: Very basic self defense class (techniques/forms). Then, he goes to the public bath club/spa [dunno what you'd call it] to soak for a while socially in a large grouping of tubs talking about various music performances people've seen and books they've read. Meets spouse at [insert name of feast hall] feast hall for dinner. Goes home to reasonably sized living room/bedroom situation (wherever he lives at with her) and reads a bit.

Vera: Female Dwarven Leather Worker

Work Hours: creates leather forms for master leather-workers. These include premade forms for use in various bags, furniture, and even armor pieces (namely the shoulders and upper arms). Also engages in very small amounts of tanning work.

After Work Hours: Very basic self defense class (techniques/forms). Then she goes to the public baths for social soaking and perhaps a massage? Goes to a social club featuring various aquariums worked into the walls and viewing exhibits and lots of seating around social tables. She meets with friends and has a light meal/snack. She then talks with friends on a public space central to all of their homes that features seating carved into the walls and some statues/engravings.

I dunno. Just trying to figure some stuff out/imagine how it would be.

I have an idea: create a dwarven location/venue. The idea is simple, but can be very detailed and maybe kinda fun.

You create a place you'd like to see in a dwarven city. List things like what it is, it's name, what various visitors would do there. What ties it would have to other places, etc. Who "owns" or is in charge of it? Who works there. What do they do. Who regularly visits there. I think it'd be a fun idea at least. :)

Legitimately, if I were a dwarf in a fortress I would want an unlimited supply of timber and modern-day woodshop tools, I would spend all of my time making mouse-trap cars!

The surroundings I would wish to have would vary by location, but would primarily have access to a laboratory, a decent sized room, access to the surface that has trees and is not innately cold, and access to a statue garden, dining hall, etc for socializing.  I would think that the living spaces would be denoted by members of the same 'clan' or family, due to my line of thinking that the dwarves have a strong meaning for family.  A possible design would be below, but that could be changed or expanded to your convenience.

Well, that's not beyond terrible by any means. I could easily see there being clan housing, family housing etc. In game that's a problem because it's a pain in the ass to track currently, but without that restriction, I don't see any problem with that at all. I would say that I think we could do more in the way of giving the dwarves larger rooms and separate shared areas (separate and aside from bedrooms). That could certainly work. Not a problem.
_____________________________________________________________________________-

I guess this is also a question for us in our modern day lives, just like it's a question for dwarves. What on earth do you do with yourself? Who do you do it with? Etc.
