After death "Impaled on a wooden pike"
« on: September 29, 2012, 02:36:04 pm »

This was my previous adventure
I decided to check him out on legends after a few more adventurers had died
I found out he was impaled on a pike............
How often does this happen, I have never seen it before

The amount of malice in this thread is actually causing me some concern. I mean, chaining up mothers and forcing them to breed, just so we can drown their children to harvest their organs? Does this strike no one else as absolutely horrific?

It's just something that happens to adventurers. All civilizations have an overwhelming urge to put the body of a fallen adventurer on a pike... even if he was a Hero in their eyes.

I get it, but what do they shove the pike through, Its not like its a sharpened spike. They have to shove it up something....

The best part is how the game specifically states what kind of wood the pike is made from.

Do you not[/b] know what a pike is?

A pike is a very sharp, very long spear (ranging from 10-25 feet long). Great for turning enemy armies into human shishkebabs. Or, because of the great length, impaling someone on one end and securing the other in the ground, leaving the body very high on display.

What do pikes look like in your mind?  Maybe you're thinking of the fish? Because impaling someone on a fish would be really hard to do.

But completely within the realm of DF.

Also, offhand, they tend to impale historical figures too. Elves are fond of impaling, or eating. Goblins just tend to impale.

Well yeah, you can get the spinning pike lodged in the wound.
And yeah, historical figures, particularly important ones, and adventurers are likely to be impaled by gobbos.  It's fun, finding your old adventurer high up in the air.

I believe this behavior dates back a very long time - upright weapons existed back in the old 2D versions (back before it was possible for your dwarves to create them), and they look to have been created upon Adventurer death within sites belonging to certain civilizations (most likely ones with [BABYSNATCHER], since most of the special flags we have today weren't introduced until version 0.27.173.38a).

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.
