Is it possible to not meet any non-dwarf civilizations?
« on: August 21, 2012, 01:14:03 pm »

I'm playing a fortress mode game, and so far (nearly 4 years in) I have only met 1 civilization, and it's been my dwarf one. Humans and Elves are definitely not extinct, I didn't check to see if Goblins or Kobolds are still around but I have never seen a game where Goblins are extinct. I'm not even anywhere that seemed that isolated, in a temperate coniferous forest, around the middle of the world. So is it possible to never be visited by other non-dwarf civs? I've never had it happen and if it can happen, I'm rather disappointed...

I reccomend letting him go nuts, though.  If he goes berserk, free target practice for your military!  If he doesn't, raving naked bedridden dwarf!

It can happen that you embark in an area without elves or humans (or goblins, for that matter) although usually it's an island, sometimes I've seen it on the mainland.

Hit [c] in game and see what pops up.

It's possible for one or more races to be extinct, or to never have existed. It's very possible to go somewhere that one or more races have no access to.

This is probably your problem. If you want to know for certain then make a copy of your save file, abandon your fortress, and then bring up the reclaim site menu and hit tab a couple times to view which civilizations have access to the site. If all it says is dwarves then you will never be able to get any other civilizations to show up regardless of what you do.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

I wonder if, with careful embark placement and lots of megaprojects, you could change the landscape so dramatically that you open up new access routes for civilizations that previously couldn't get around/over obstacles.
