Weaponizing dragons.
« on: August 16, 2012, 05:09:23 pm »

I have a dragon, trained and ready for combat. several, actually. To weaponize them, I was considering making the walls of the entrancve traphall out of drawbridges, and pasture the dragons on the other side, then pull the lever to release the drawbridge, exposing the nasty sieges to dragonfire, but I have a couple questions:

Does dragonfire melt traps that are on the ground? will it melt bridges that are not raised? how many dragons should I use? Should I build dragonfire sniper towers instead?

Probably, almost certainly, one is fine, dragonfire only works on enemies on the same z-level. I'd advise fortifications with a pit on the far side, to protect the dragon from archers and keep it from rushing in.

Dunno if traps/bridges made of magma-safe materials (iron, steel, etc) are also dragon-fire proof. But if they're made of nether-cap, it's fine if I remember correctly.
EDIT : some interesting stuff here : http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=109260.0

See, I wanted to use bridges to shield his scaliyness from projectiles fired from elite archers, since I have no idea how far a plume of dragonbreath will reach. I also want him protected fom clouds of blinding soot, if that is possible.

Why not just let them lose on the enemy?

If you want to protect it from both archers and wheather, I think the best is to enclose it into fortifications sealed on the top by a ceiling. A dragon bunker-turret. The beast will not move though.

Movement isn't neccesary, I have multiple dragons :P. Fortifications block weather?

Good question, the more I think about it the less I am certain of that. In fact my recent experiences were with blinding sand clouds and fortifications around a brige : no matter what, they were visually swallowed up by the cloud (I didn't check the coating though). But I assumed (maybe wrongly) it was due to the lake of an upper protection, whereas the cloud was on the same level (even though these phenomenons able to move on the upper/lower levels). In fine I don't know if clouds flood the fortifications "because" they are on the same z-level, or because they go over it, or merely because they flood all that is set outside, no matter what you do.

AFAIK Dragonbreath melts down most things even some magma-safe materials but can only afect the same z-lvl as said before.
Also I do think that Dragonbreath runs freely through fortifications.

You can test the range (And frequency) of dragonfire in the Arena of the game.

The problem are shields...Even a Wooden Shield WILL protect the wielder from the dragon fire(most of the time) completely.
Dragons dont bode well with pastures chains(they can easily break them).

Just a side note: Your bridge can melt down with dragonfire if not made of dragon-safe materials, making the Bridge shield idea a bad one. I recommend catwalks as the only way in your fort and putting your dragons to guard its passage.

Nether-cap bridges and fortification pillboxes sound good.

My one concern is elite bowmen. I have no idea if the rounds can penetrate dragonscale, and it's not like I don;t have dragons to spare, but it still worries me.

Elite bowmen can and will hit your dragon through fortifications,  it's best to have some dragonfire proof (nether-cap) bridge that you can bring up to protect it while elite bowman are firing at him.

It only takes one lucky and armed goblin to end a dragon...

Also, put something between the fortifications and the goblins, or else goblins right next to the fortifications will be able to fire right at the dragon.
