I mean, people do tell me stories about their families, but they never use phrases like "I had an aunt who once saved me from bogeymen" or "My wife Orid Foughtqueens and I often talked into the night". It's just "I have an aunt named ..." or "My wife is named ..."

I assumed that this was a new feature in .11 (haven't gotten around to updating yet). I don't think it would be possible to mod that in without great effort and 1337 skillz.

It sounds like those are based on personality traits of the historical figures in question. So, that means that every person in that takes-five-minutes-to-scroll-through historical figures list has a modesty and aesthetic sensitivity score. I'm pretty sure they've had these all along and it determines what professions they take (thrill-seeking -> wandering the wilds, etc.), but this is the first we can see it more or less directly.  I bet they all have favorite colors and some of them detest hamsters, too.  This is another example of why DF is awesome; not only does it simulate things down to a disturbing level of detail, but it does so even when there is little or no chance of the player even being aware of it.

DF people are not only bits of data.
They have hopes, and aspirations!
DF makes its people alive!

For this, I am going on elf-genocide.
Since when did you need a reason an excuse?
Since the 'Elves are plants too,' amendment of 28th of Felsite 314.

This is a mod, right? You really confused me because my Adventurer Mode conversations were never this elaborate.
I don't know, maybe you're right. You could always check by downloading my save.

You should become a marketer :P
I downloaded it, played it, found the priest, and he told me stuff like this:
Quote from: Tikes Inidispran, exalted pelt
I had a cousin named Xugot Rumorworship. In 242, Xugot married Sino Crestlast.

My maternal grandfather was named Bikda Horngang. In 227, Bikda died of old age.

I had an older sister named Nedol Ironchewed. In 262, Nedul was struck down by the giant tiger Blottedblamed in The Hoary Jungles.
and so on.

So, yeah, you're clearly using a mod.

I thought so, too, but Toady worked on bug fixing and didn't mention any new personality features. It's not very hard to mod it, either.

Well, the historical figures might have preferences and personality traits, but they aren't really taken into consideration in the actual game right now (at least until the personality rewrite). The family conversations are based on the family_relationship files in /data/speech. That's where all the possible sentences are stored, and in vanilla DF that's only "I have a [family member] named [name]" and "My [family member] is named [name]".
If you add more possible sentences, one is chosen at random. That's why Tikes is a bit contradictory about his wife: on the one hand he says that she was someone to avoid, but on the other hand they often talked into the night. If you ask him long enough, he will contradict himself in his opinions on other relatives, too.

Still, it's a neat mod. Would you mind telling the name, Freak2121?

If he used a mod, the saved game's raws would represent all the modifications, thus would bear the new fleshed-out dialogue. You sure you didn't f something up?

Ah, if mods carry on in save raws, then the only mod I used was Fear the Night. Does that add new dialogue sentences?
I recently got DF Masterwork and just copied my saves over to its folder.
Also the sentences do appear to be randomly chosen. I had talked to another historical figure about their family and the "saved me from bogeymen" line came up.

Ah, but the speech files aren't in the raws, they are in /data/speech. You'd have to upload the whole DF folder, not just the save files, to transfer changed dialog.

This mod doesn't carry on in the saves, so it has to be a Masterwork thing. Thanks!

Not a dialog mod. Stop fighting it.
