Perhaps you can try leaving a trail of breadcrumbs back to the surface?

Or at least dumping a bunch of seeds or something near certain ramps and such.  Anything to avoid getting lost in those dang mazes.
Copper coins.
Heads of your victims.
Trail of fat from the butchered bodies of animals you've hunted.
The legs of the giant cave spider you defeated months ago and have been carrying around with you for just such an occassion!

The millions of gems you collected in a previous dungeon.

Copper coins do seem like the best option, given their low weight and large stacks. I had been using the bolts of archers, but those are heavy.
Make sure you throw, not drop, as you would drop the whole stack, not a single coin.

Also, you might be able to put the markers on only one side of the tunnel, for example the right side (relative to your traveling direction). That way, to go back, keep the markers on the left. [À la Minecraft]

I'm still for pebbles, fat or sand. No need to carry anything.
(As long as you can find stuff)

A little difficult in a sewer or dungeon since there are no stones lying around and the floor is made of bricks rather than soil.

I had a stack of three thousand copper coins (I sold some gemstones) - that's what I ended up using.

You can collect them before you go in... Even in towns, there's gotta be some loam lying around, right?
