Sewer issue
« on: April 25, 2012, 08:35:49 pm »

So I had this quest sitting there for a while: I had to kill a guy somewhere under a town. I went through the whole dungeon under the keep, and a temple nearby, but couldn't find him. Am left with the sewers, but after exploring a bit, the only path available is a pit several z-levels deep, and I'm wondering if there's any way down there without splattering myself on the floor below. I have a rope, but I don't think it's long enough (nor do I know what to do with it), and I also had heard that an animal would cushion my fall, but don't really see how I could get one down there.
I could leave it at that and do my much more glorious other quests (it's been there nearly since the beginning, really), but it really bugs me every time I open the Q menu. Could anyone give some insight into this?

There should be a stairway down somewhere, it's just a matter of running across it. Use Travel mode to wander around town until you see Sewer Access listed along with the shops/houses/well and then just walk around in the area until you find it. Corners and areas along the wall are your best bet from what I've seen.

Sometimes the sewer has an outlet into a stream or river, but those have a bad tendency to kill your adventurer if you try to swim through them since swimming under constructions/natural features automatically make you start to drown.

I'm pretty sure I've been across the whole town and that one access was the only one. It's a hilly town, everything seems to be on slopes, somehow, I can't see where the f*** I'm going most of the time, and that access alone was pretty hard to find, being wedged in a 1 tile wide platform between two houses (if I leave now, I know I'll have a hard time finding it again).

Will try to find another way in, but I'm still curious about whether it would be feasable to sort of rappel down the wall. If not, I guess I'll suggest for future implementation.

EDIT: Found the outlet, tried to swim up it but drowned, predictably. Then found a second access outside the walls. There was a pretty big part of the town outside the city walls, so I guess I was being kind of stupid.

Take a few days of food and water because it is way to easy to loose your way.  I've had my adventures almost die down there but I lucked out and found one of the 2 frickeng exits to the damn labyrinth.  Also a faster way to get down there is to go into the fort and go to the basement but just watch out for whats down there.

Personally, I like it because after climbing the damned learning cliff, I'm too elitist to consider not liking it.
If murdering parents in front of their kids in the most gruesome manner possible is too much for you, you have not played Dwarf Fortress
You should be drowning babies by now, human.

Also note that creatures could be in sealed off areas of the sewers, so your quest may be impossible. If it is, standard procedure is to kill the quest giver.

That was the problem all along, neither the dungeon nor the temple had any connection to the sewers. Usually I find it pretty quickly, but this time I went through that dungeon 3 times just to make sure, and nothing.

By now, I've explored the sewers, found several other exits (so I KNOW I was being stupid), but all paths (afaik) lead to dead-ends or suddenly drop down several z-layers with no stairs in sight.
Some lowly peasant gave me that quest. Maybe I should wipe out the whole civ to make sure I don't miss him.

Found it! There was another outlet up further north, and they were all hangin out near entrance. I had to go in and back off repeatedly, and shoot (throw, rather) a few arrows from the entrance, in fear of drowning mid battle, until I realized that if I stopped sneaking, they might chase me, which is what I did. The rest was cake.
Now, I'm happy.

I can tell you this much: it's gonna be a bitch to find him.

I went down into the sewers to find an amphibian woman and ended up getting murdered horribly by a dwarf vampire.

That was after almost three hours of navigating the twisted, maze-like sewers by the way.

It's really a pain in the ass to find people in towns. I just kill quest-givers if they give me a "find this biatch who killed some people nobody cares about" kinda quest.

Perhaps you can try leaving a trail of breadcrumbs back to the surface?

Or at least dumping a bunch of seeds or something near certain ramps and such.  Anything to avoid getting lost in those dang mazes.
