MarksDorfs and bolts
« on: March 25, 2012, 03:27:37 pm »

I have some fortifications set up over a killzone. works pretty decently except for the fact that i cannot get my marksdorfs to reload consistently. once they fire all their ammo the just stand around doing nothing. is there any way to tell them to go get more? right now i am deactivating the squad and hoping they go get more on their own, but that does not seem to work very often. has anyone else come up with something that works?

I'm a bit rusty on these things, but I was lead to believe that dorfs don't like to reload when there's enemies in sight - have them hide behind a wall or have a bridge that can be raised to block LOS so dorfs can reload :)

did you by chance specify different bolts for training and "go to war"?  like, bone/wood for training, metal for war?

if so, this is the problem.

if not, give a move order to the squad (cancelling current order) to the ammo stockpile.  when the squad is there, cancel order, watch them reload, then order them back to their firing position.

or just cancel their current move order. They usually come back anyway.

Have them patrol between the wall and an immediately adjacent craftdwarfshop making bolts on repeat.  It works best if the workshop if underground/out of sight.

This. And by 'adjacent', make that 'on a different z-level, out of sight from enemies'. I assume you've made sure your marksdwarves don't have a short, easy path to charge at enemies after ammo depletion.

Congrats, Psieye. This is the first time I've seen a derailed thread get put back on the rails.
