Yeah, if he's needing 9 wood and one gold bar, youll have to wait like....15 seconds at least before he'll let you know about the gold. he will sketch forest, x9, but it wont change on your screen.

the other thing is to look at his personality. If he likes oak then maybe he wants oak logs and not just any old wood. This definitely can happen for metals, not sure whether dorfs care about different wood types.

Another idea, use the 't' key mode to see what he has already collected in the workshop. That way you can tell where he is on his list of things to grab. Although it's too late to check this now, you can use it the next time...
