bridging lols
« on: September 09, 2011, 10:35:23 am »

don't suppose there's a way to connect 2 bridges to the same lever but have them operate opposite ways is there?

like 1 lever and have it connected to 2 bridges one bridge is up wile the other is down then when you flip it they change roles.

300 human/elf/dwarf/goblin/kobold bodies 20 random animal/fish/bird bodies and 3 dragon bodies all in one backpack. fun stuff.

No, but there are a couple of ways that you could get that result. If you're using raised drawbridges to block off areas, you can replace one of the bridges with a set of floodgates. You could link the lever to a pump that will flood a water-triggered pressure plate (linked to the second bridge) with water, and open a floodgate or lower a bridge to let water drain when the lever is pulled again. There are other ways too, but I'm too lazy to come up with any more.

1. Build bridge 1
2. Bridge 1 is ON by default
3. Connect bridge 1 to lever
4. Pull lever
5. Bridge 1 is OFF
6. Build bridge 2
7. Bridge 2 is ON by default
8. Connect bridge 2 to lever
9. ???

Or does that not work for some reason?

That won't work because the lever doesn't toggle the positions of the things it's linked to (with one exception) - the lever will just send an "on" signal when it's pulled, and an "off" signal the next time. If a signal is received by an object in that position already, it's ignored.

The one exception is gear assemblies, which do toggle when the lever is pulled.

EDIT: Aah ninja.

what i'm trying to do is make an easy to reset breakable bridge where one bridge will be down to block the path to the spot with the support wile the other is up closing my fort, i guess i could just build the bridge in the tunnle to the support tho and have it close the tunnle off at the same time as my fort is closed

so yea, my dwarfs are mentally retarded sadly, my miner dug out a channel between lava and water and then STEPPED INTO IT and got solidified.

*Pictures a dwarf encased in carbonite*

Mine out all the blocks around it, get a engraving on the carbonite block, and make it a tomb for him.

Gear assemblies are the only things that toggle; you could connect two out-of-phase gearboxes to two screw pumps and have it so that one and only one is on at a time. Going from there to the behavior you want would be harder, though - perhaps have the screw pumps pump right onto a pressure plate set to trigger on 7/7 water only, with a drain immediately next to the plate right back into the water source. Might be somewhat unreliable though, I dunno, not to mention that it might hurt FPS esp. with the mist.

Two ways:

a) Change your furniture.  Use a door instead of the second bridge.  Use a retracting bridge over a ramp with a drawbridge instead of two drawbridges.  Lots of possibilities.

b) Use a logic circuit that inverts your input.  Wiki has great examples, search for creature logic, fluid logic, or mechanical logic, and scroll down to a NOT gate.

My solution would be via creature logic (that's my thing).  Here's what I'd do:

Code: [Select]

  ###
###d####
Xh^hh^hX
####h###
   ###

X is just path to map edge.  h is hatch over open space.  d is door.  ^ is pressure plate.  Each ^ is linked to both orthogonally adjacent h.  Your lever is linked to the d and to the southern h.  East ^ is linked to one bridge, west ^ is linked to the other bridge.  Drop a goblin in.
