They are a piece of furniture made with a table, rope/chain, and mechanism.

Their function is to restrain injured dwarves while doctors operate on them.

They're used to immobilise joints while the dwarf heals up.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

And when we say immobilise joints while the dwarf heals up, we mean we are giving that dwarf a harem and forcefully rewarding that dwarf by raping requisitioning their spores for future generations.

and then the dwarf will lay on it for years until you deconstruct it

Sometimes they get stuck. Sometimes they just take that long to heal. You can check a dwarf's health directly to see which it is.
