Sand desert turning to rocky wasteland due to tree/plant
« on: December 23, 2007, 01:52:00 pm »

Fort is on a white sand desert. This sand is 4 layers deep. Every time I harvest a tree or plant, it turns the square into a obsidian pebble square instead of a white sand square. The obsidian pebble squares can't be used for farming even though they're solid white sand underneath. The nearest obsidian is on level -5 after the aquifer.

In forests and grasslands, chopping down trees/plants results grass or dirt/sand. So this behavior is rather odd.

This is interesting.  Did you perchance generate the world in .33e or earlier, then move it to .33f or later?

Game started in .33g yesterday. 2/3rds of the "white sand" squares are now "obsidian pebbles".

The new map I started is entirely white sand and plain sand on the surface, but I don't think I have any naturally occurring plants or trees, so if it's only those I can't help confirm. If harvesting farm plants does this as well, however...

Okay, I'll take a look at it at some point.

I get a bug similar to this, whenever I cut down a tree I get sand instead of grass.  My top layer is covered with grass but it is slowly turning to sand as I harvest the trees, I think that the top layer was labeled sand in the embark screen.

EDIT: Oh yeah, I'm using 38c.

That's normal.  The grass and other plants are growing on the sand, and the dwarves are trampling and picking it off the sand.  Grass will gradually grow back over the sand.

Oh, good, for a while there I was worried that my map was gradually going to turn into sand. Sorry for making a wrong bug report.

That's a good thing, unless you prefer herbology to farming.
