for the Floodgates vs. Drawbridges issue I have no idea

HOWEVER...

On the Floodgates vs. Doors issue I have this to say though: Floodgates have the advantage that you can build them more than two wide, which actually makes them better than doors for some defensive purposes (this will be especially true once wagons are reinstated, because three tile wide access to trade depots will then be necessary)

Here are the differences between doors and floodgates that I care about:

Doors:
0-frame delay on triggering
Default to closed
Can be locked/unlocked at will
Can be screwed with by thieves and ambushers

Floodgates:
100-frame delay on triggering
Default to closed
Must be opened by trigger
Any random Urist can build one

Drawbridges:
100-frame delay on triggering
Default to open
Must be raised by trigger
Indestructible

So basically, I use floodgates as counterparts to drawbridges in airlocks (which I tend to use in water logic systems for actual, two-bridge-one-lever airlocks). They're a nice thing to have.

A door linked to a lever or pressure plate can't be taken. It's just like a floodgate in that regard.

It really sounds like floodgates are pointless.

One query: do floodgates block flow from z-levels above or below? IE, if on z+1 I have a channeled-out floor tile, on z I have a floodgate, if I close the floodgate does that stop water/magma from flowing down from z+1? Do doors block flow that way?

I like to use my flood gates to, well, gate floods. And bridges? Well that's quite simple really, I use them to bridge gaps! ...and to atom smash my junk but that's another thing entirely.

It isn't. There isn't time for it to hurt.
