If you have a small embark and turn off a few cave levels, this can happen.

Hey, at least you won't have FPS problems from accessing magma.

(although you will get FPS problems from HFS, of course)

I usually find I have more than enough space on 8 z-levels... That includes decorative space and plumbing, too. In my current fort, I've got 10 z-levels that are really used for anything at all, and I actually have too many places set out for workshops and don't have all of my specified stockpiles dug out yet, and many of the stockpiles I do have are kept perpetually near-empty (like the ore stockpile) or just there because it makes my people slightly more efficient (like the stone stockpile above my masons' shops).

I know my fort isn't as efficient as it could be - it's about 60 tiles from side to side IIRC - and a hell of a lot of its space is decorative - all paths between the various workshop and bedroom columns and the central column are catwalks over 5+ z-level open pits, ultimately to be 20+ z-levels once I collapse the area below into the SMR - but it's so much easier to read and aesthetically pleasing when the map most things are on the same z-level.

So, perhaps the question is, what are you doing with more than 10 z-levels?

i mine the stuff out and give entire floors to nobles. not space efficient but it keeps them quiet.

I don't think I could deal with anything less than 50 z levels.

While adding magma to anything will make it dwarfy, adding the word "magma" to your post does not necessarily make it funny.

I usually build my actual fort quite a few Z-levels down, usually near or between cavern layers. The farther away from the terrible, terrible sky, the better.

oh Armok the sky... that infinite upwards chasm...

Yeah, in the future you probably shouldn't strike the earth quite so hard
