Wow... Guess I'll be designating a new mason to turn the jet stone into blocks so I can get the wall up quickly.  I read through the cited post with all the science, and the "total time involved plus hauling" argument is pedantic.  I want to limit the amount of time my masons spend outside in danger.  I don't care about how much time it takes overall... so I guess I'll be putting off the wall project a little longer for staging in safety.

Designate a stockpile for blocks as close as is safe to where you want the wall to go.  Limit it to the kind of blocks you want to use.  Wait to specify the wall designation until the stockpile is full.  As long as you don't designate more wall than you have blocks in the stockpile, the masons will grab blocks directly from that stockpile.  Meanwhile your haulers will be refilling the stockpile as the masons use them.  If amount of time to haul beforehand doesn't matter, then this is probably your best practice for building a fast wall.  This is how I usually build outside structures like walls.  It takes a bit for the hauling to get done unless you have a whole bunch of idle dwarves, but the building, which is the important part, goes like lightning.  As constructions go up, I'll delete the old stockpile and make a new one and my haulers will come out and move the blocks to the new location.  And if you only specify a small part of the construction at a time, your masons will be out for a minimal amount at a time.

I don't understand, though that is about right with anything DF related.
I just hope he dies the same death that all dwarfs deserve: liver disease.

Yeah, this is what I'm trying to figure out right now: where to put the stockpile.

Also (I know this is sort of tangental here), is it possible to designate a type of stone block in the stockpile?  All I could find is an option for stone block, nothing more specific.  (I'm running .12 still.)  I've got a few different types of stone block going at the moment.  I wouldn't want to clutter the stockpile up with blocks I don't need.

Edit:  Found the answer to that one.  Apparantly the Blocks: Metal category has more than just metal in it.
