Waging war against the fun stuff
« on: August 15, 2010, 02:03:33 am »

So, ever since I've began my fort I wanted to fight against the denizens of hell, partly for fun and partly out of revenge from making my other fort die an FPS death when I released them. So here's my question: I'm putting all kinds of stuff down there, building a fort underground near their lair. I haven't broken into it yet, of course. Is doing something like this sustainable, or even survivable over a period of time? Note that my dwarves are highly trained, efficient killing machines made of rage and hard alcohol. Any tips?

While they all are immune to water, magma, fear, pain, can fly, are about 160 times the size of a dwarf etc etc etc .. a cave-in will instantly kill them. Encasing them in obsidian is an idea as well.

More conventional methods include marksdwarves, ballista ranges and (I know they're immune.. normally!) weapontraps. I've seen them set off traps when they're hit by ballistas/lots of pointy things. I wonder if cagetraps would work here as well? Spike traps with a dwarf pulling the lever constantly would mess them up as well.

Just remember that there are lots of them, they can fly, and are death incarnate. And more demons spawn periodically. It's a neverending fight.

And lots means at least billions. Not all on the map at the same time, but AFAIK you can't stop them from spawning...

even as we speak people are kicking the crap out of clowns with modded animals/dwarves

without modding though?  Id say head on fighting is impossible in the long term. (please prove me wrong)

If you can manage to take on one or two at a time, a well trained military will do fine (against most of the demons, anyway). And like someone said, cave-ins will crush them.

There was one guy who managed to kill the initial wave (which was about 200 demons) with a well equipped military of about 60 or so.  After this, the only demons that came in were a couple that floated in from the map edges and even they stopped spawning eventually.

So yeah, biggest danger about demons is the FPS drop from the initial wave (if you're well equipped to handle it).

Is there any way to do something about the FPS drop. Spoiler got breached due to a bug when I used DFReveal. (yes I know, I'm a dirty stinking cheater.) BUt I'm not really anywhere near Spoiler.

On the left a cannon which shoots dwarf children into the sun, on the right, a massive pit full of magma charred dwarfs and elves.

Will they break a hatch if I place it over a pit?

The clowns will smash doors, hatches, floodgates etc.  And the FPS drop is caused by the 200 clowns that suddenly show up, to fix it they must die.

the numbers dont matter if you process them through a disassembly line >:D

Are the fortresses there for psychological reasons?  Are they trying to hold back entropy itself, rather than the goblin hordes?

They will smash bridges if you try to lower draw bridges on their heads, I know that
