Stupid dwarves, dead ends, and floodgates
« on: July 18, 2010, 05:23:00 pm »

How do i make it so my dwarves don't seal off themselves when placing a floodgate? For example, floodgates for irrigation reservoirs have them sealed off when they install them.

I have half a mind to just leave to die every single dwarf stupid enough to do that. Natural selection style.

Build a door on the wrong side of the floodgate-to-be. Immediately suspend construction of the door, but don't cancel it completely. Now build the floodgate. The installer won't step into the square with the door. Once the gate is installed, cancel the door construction.

I find placing and suspending a wall works just as well, and even more if you actually need that door.

You.

Guys.

Are.

Heroes.

I wish I had always known this. I can't tell you how many of my drained murky ponds have a single staircase at the back, or how many miners died in a hole before I thought of digging the staircase.

I also found that you can make traffic restricted using [d]then
  • and they will build on the correct side.

Helps alot when you build out side of the mountains :D

Why even use a floodgate anyway? Is there some advantage they have over doors? It seems to me that when connected to a lever, doors are identical in function and respond faster.

A door cannot close in 4/7+ of water/magma.

In addition to the water depth mentioned above, doors also need to be connected to a wall on at least one edge.  Floodgates can be free-standing, so if you want a three or more wide flood barrier (you can of course connect them all to the one lever) you want floodgates.

In a fat-fingered moment while setting up another military squad I accidentally created a captain of the guard rather than a militia captain.  His squad of near-legendary hammerdwarves equipped with high quality silver hammers then took it upon themselves to dispense justice to all the mandate breakers in the fortress.  It was quite messy.

Dwarfs will perform actions from the north/left if possible. So if the water/one way is on the right. They will do it no problem.

I am fairly certain that this is not true.  I have never seen a door have trouble closing in any depth of water or magma.

I agree, I have completely stopped using floodgates and have never seen the behavior described by Gax.

Even better, if you build the door, dig into the brook and THEN connect the door to a lever, the door keeps the chamber from flooding.  None of this "I JUST BREACHED THE RIVER! CLOSE THE GATE!!" mess.  After I connect the door, I build a fortification on the other side of the door.

It's a quirk of mine that I keep using floodgates to control water. Doors shouldn't work so well at it. Grump.

I personally use neither doors nor floodgates, I prefer to use raising bridges.  With a bridge you do not have to build anything at a workshop first, you can span multiple tiles with one construction, and they start in the open state(thus not trapping the builder).  You can also use retractable bridges over holes for various valving purposes, and when used in conjunction with raising bridges they work rather well for airlock systems, since their states are opposite (in the 'off' position retractable bridges 'closed' and raising bridges are 'open') and they have the same activation delay.
