I prefer the method of searching for it myself, finding the actual result, and putting a link in there with the search for it statement.

I usually post links to the search results.  The only time I wouldn't is if the search term is a one word term that appears in the thread title.  If I need to later I can then link it (e.g. if the poster says "I did" I can go "no, you didn't" and link the search result I did for their thread title).
This creates false positives. Next time someone needs to search it adds 1 to the results that doesn't even contain the information they need. Yes you help a lazy person by posting a link, but you also help everyone who isn't lazy as well. I started doing this when I became fed up with the results returned from my search attempts.

Someone really needs to write forum software that has an elegant way to reliably but unobtrusively alert readers to the fact that the first n posts of a thread are old, followed by much more recent ones.  Responding to an existing thread would often be generally preferred, except for the unfortunate fact that it isn't always immediately obvious to all the readers who see a recently active thread that most of it is not recently active content.  If we could get around that particular problem, then people probably wouldn't be compelled to complain about necroing nearly as often; it would be a non-issue.

Considering that this is a forum for the DEVELOPMENT of a game, I think that starting a new thread would probably be the intelligent thing to do.  Yes, link to previous posts on the subject, but do be kind enough to explain what you are linking to.  After all, a pile of links with "Discuss" afterward is even more lame than bringing a 6 year old thread back from the dead.

As to when to switch from search to necro, I would say that if you can't find anything on the first 5 pages of threads with a title search(using the browsers find feature to look for important words in the title), then either the topic is dead, or whoever last posted it didn't know how to make a title.

Only vaguely. Made of the same substance and put to the same use, but a bit like comparing a castle and a doublewide trailer.

The square root of 0 is 0.  i is the square root of -1.

This creates false positives. Next time someone needs to search it adds 1 to the results that doesn't even contain the information they need. Yes you help a lazy person by posting a link, but you also help everyone who isn't lazy as well. I started doing this when I became fed up with the results returned from my search attempts.

I apologize if people are too lazy to read a thread before realizing that it doesn't help/isn't the most relevant.  If you find a thread via search that says "use search" obviously you need to go back to the search results (which are cached!) and find an older thread.

It's really not that hard.  It takes 10 minutes, and your oh so awesome idea can wait 10 minutes to be posted.  No really, it can.  Most of us aren't going to see it for at least four hours anyway.

Why was this necroed? Well I guess its more productive then posting a whole new one. Even if the Necromancer in question wasn't doing it the right way  ;D

Ive noticed recently (about a week ago) there was a rash of postings in the modding section of different people requesting mods or information on mods that had been made and were on the first page, I guess sometimes it isnt a new vs necro or even search function vs new post, but simple reading that gets in the way.

Don't bother - I waited a whole year just for a one shot punchline, and no-one laughed ;)

BTW, the forum warns you if you are trying to reply to a thread that hasn't been touched in 120 days.

In a fat-fingered moment while setting up another military squad I accidentally created a captain of the guard rather than a militia captain.  His squad of near-legendary hammerdwarves equipped with high quality silver hammers then took it upon themselves to dispense justice to all the mandate breakers in the fortress.  It was quite messy.

As for Necroing, I don't really feel mad if people necro, as long as it is relavent. I laugh when their reply doesn't seem to take into account the great time difference between posts. Bonus points if it is really close with only a year difference, since it shows that they did a quick check but failed in the details ;)
