GCS silk farming
« on: May 10, 2010, 11:38:28 pm »

Guys, I've caught a GCS, and I wanted to farm its silk. I already tamed it, and now it doesn't want to attack anything. I tried a wild animal, a pet, a dwarf, and a goblin, all to no effect. They were all behind fortifications which I've heard do not affect GCS webs.

Also, how do you disarm a goblin? it seems impossible.

I love this. In three pages we've gone from being willing to eat intelligent beings, to trying to make them *more* intelligent, so it will be more fun to eat them.

Spiders won't generally spit through fortifications, or rather, they won't do it consistently or anything like regularly. While the webs will fly through fortifications when they miss the original target, spiders won't typically shoot through them.

It is possible to farm silk, but the "usual" method that is suggested doesn't work well at all. Look into the Fire Imp Defense thread; while it's for 40d#, the research there should still apply to 31.0x and to GCSs. The basic thing you need to know is that spiders (and imps) absolutely must have the ability to path to the target to spit, so you need some shenanagans in order to both allow the spider to path to the target and disallow the spider from eating said target.

To disarm a goblin, capture it in a cage, then, using the mass dump designation (d-b-d I believe is the hotkey sequence) to designate the cage and all its contents for dumping, then use the item menu (k) to examine the cage itself and undesignate it from dumping. Dwarves will come along and drag all of the goblin's items to a garbage dump, where they can be reclaimed.

Can't say about the giant spider, but to disarm a goblin, use Dump.  Move the cage out of storage (Build | Cage), mark the tile as dump everything (Designate | Buildings | Dump), and wait for your dwarves to come to the cage  and strip away all the equipment.  If you actually want the stuff for later sale, put the cage near a specialized dump with nothing else in it, then once the stuff is all in a pile you can use Designate | Buildings | Reclaim (C) to remove the Forbidden tags enmasse.

All I have is some goblins, and i think they open pet-impassable doors. The dwarves won't restrain the goblin because they are spooked by it when they take it out of its cage, leaving it to get caught in the carefully-placed cage trap.

Also, will the GCS path to the goblin if it (the CGS) is restrained?

If I recall correctly you won't ever get anything from him since he's tame now.  Only wild ones shoot silk.

Hrm... I don't think it will.

Why don't you try adding a lever to a goblin cage, putting it near your GCS, and adding cage traps.

Pull lever.
Goblin runs out.
GCS webs.
Goblin is caged.
Web is collected.
Profit!

Or... have your weaver (armored) wrestle a small creature in a confined space. The creature should take out the dwarf's eyes, rendering it blind, and it will then be able to collect webs without ever seeing the goblins. (Also works for recovering wounded from near an active threat).

Goblins will open pet-impassable doors because they are not pets, but they can't open locked doors (i.e. ones that dwarves can't get through). To release the goblin you can build the cage somewhere and link a lever to it, but I don't know how you would let the GCS path to the goblin and still keep the goblin trapped.

A restrained creature will only path as far as it's restraint allows, I think... I could be wrong though.

This is, in my opinion, one of the more disturbing images that has come out of Dwarf Fortress thus far... and that's saying something! I love it! *maniacal laughter*

in my drow mod i have "drowspider" as default pets, as far i can see:

they will shoot web if they are enganged in combat from aggresive monsters, but need to be on adjacent tiles. have not tried war/hunting yet, but i guess trained spiders will engage for themself and use web.

so for sure: tamed spiders will shoot silk, they are just not as aggresive as the wild ones (at least untrained)

Add TRAINABLE tags then?

You need to make said elf leather into the most amazing work of art.  Embed it with every kind of gem you have, stud it with metals, and sew images into it.  Erect a shrine outside your fort with that in the center.  Let the elves know that you view their very skin as naught more but a medium for your dwarves to work on.

Ya, a touch of modding to add trainable, then attach them to a hunter, or a military man who gets kill orders for wildlife.

Reminds me of the time I modded dwarves to spit silk. Was funny with hunters.
