This can vary widely based on system specs, an embark that is laggy for you might be fine for someone with a better system.

For me I stick to 3x3 areas, since there are tons and tons of Z levels in the new version and loads of interesting things underground I really see no reason to have a huge area.

Tears were shed, I stick with 3x3, there was that one guy who either ran it at full size or 200 dwarfs max, mine is crawling at 50 on a 3x3.  It all depends.

Typically, I go with a 5x5 area, but the map I'm working on right now is something like a 6x4 which feels a lot better.  In 40d, I did do a 5x5 with a full 200+ dwarves, but it was running at about 15 FPS (up to 25ish when I turned off temps and weather).

4 by 4 and cap the population at 150.

3x3 is made of win, its the best ratio of size/performance of all maps.

You should definitively use a square map. 3x3 works better than 4x2 as the lag mostly comes from flood pathfinding so square maps are always more efficient than rectangular.

I generally have 4x4 maps, only because my computer is fairly fast (despite it's age) and the fact that I never really end up with that many dwarves. Though, when I do, the computer handles it fine.
