1. The graphics
2. The music
3. Multiplayer mode
4. Fast paced action
5. That it doesn't have any of these, and it's still better than any game currently available.

1. Sandbox.
2. Devilish traps of unimaginable brutality and cunning.
3. City builder + strategy + Dungeon Keeper + Lemmings + more scope than pretty much anything ever published.
4. Having a Legendary mason beat a goblin baby-snatcher to death with his gnarled, bare knuckles.
5. Watching Goblins, thieving, kid-stealing scumbag goblins, step into 10 Masterwork Obsidian Shortsword traps; ie., about 1000 scalpels- and suffer a death that can only be described as "like a handgrenade, but filled with surgical blades". See 3 and 4.
5.1 So much blood! So... much... blood....

and underground forests of giant fungi, and underground farms full of bizarre *synthesis (where * is anything but photo-) fueled plants, and subterranean pools filled with Creatures That Time Forgot, and... and.... magma! And MAGMA FORGES!!

1. impressive depth of game. simcity + lemmings + sims + ....
2. procedural world
3. learning curve. you start with simple things (how to dig) only to discover more and more complex. there's always something new to discover as your fortress grows. And then it dies:)
4. community. sensestone, therapist (+precedesors), dfterm, ... continue by yourself
5. Toady. I, as software architect and business analyst, has learnt something from dev diary (arcs, power goals, bloats, stories) and I love to watch its progress

DF is a real gem. No wonder smallest stars with highest densities are called "white dwarves". This game is the same. It is small, but it is massive inside.
