Top 5 - Why you love DF
« on: March 22, 2010, 12:37:56 pm »

1. Carp.

2. Elves being slain by Elf Bone Bolts.

3. Kitten farms.

4. Awesome stories to share with other DFers that make you sound like a mental patient to non-DFers.

5. Magma, not 42, being the ultimate answer to Life, the Universe and Everything.

No, its realistic.

I dont think realism is a major concern in a game about alcoholic midgets fighting dragons and soapmen.

5. Being able to control my FPS by tossing kittens into magma.

4. Same as above, but with puppies.

3. (ok, time for a serious one) The sheer depth of the game. I've always found that the best games are the ones that require investments from the players. Not just time, but you need to want to learn to play. Once I finished Captain Duck's tutorial videos, and I started playing my first fortress, every new thing was a real accomplishment. From digging into the mountain, to pulling my first sword off the anvil at my forge, I had to work to get it. I wouldn't have it any other way.

2. Being able to really do what I want, confined only by the items in the game. Reading the mega-project threads is a testament to what is possible in games. Major developers should take notice.

1. Everything about my world is procedurally generated. From the river outside, to the rich history of the world. The trees outside, to the story of the Dwarven Queen who stood against the elves, and became the last dwarf in the world, before dying of old age. All of this is unique, and the result of clicking "new world".

I think this is where the DF-players-are-Hitler jokes go from being just jokes to still jokes but lose some of their irony.

Still. Someone has to open up a chain of McUrist's sooner or later.

1: The depth.
2: The worlds.
3: The infinite possibilities for awesome.
4: It's FREE. FOR F**KS SAKE, THIS AMAZING GAME IS COMPLETELY FREE!!!!!!
5: Because it's still in development, so I get to see the evolution.

Yeah, that's right, alphas and betas make me dribble a bit.

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

1- The most versatile sandbox game I have ever played.
2- Rather user-friendly modding, provided you know what you're doing.
3- Still in development (new features each release, and each release is practically a different game in themselves).
4- No goal, no story, nothing; and it's perfect that way.
5- Last, but not least, the community. I haven't seen so much consistent awesomeness. It's the gift that keeps on giving.

4. Hehehehe, yeah, good times, man.
3. Hooo boy... *sniff* Ah, memories.
2. Anyways. What were we talking about?

That's the great thing about this forum. We can derail any discussion into any other topic.
It's not an embark so much as seven dwarves having a simultaneous strange mood and going off to build an artifact fortress that menaces with spikes of awesome and hanging rings of death.

1.In depth world with high degrees of fantastic realism (ie realism in a fantastic world, such as the genetics of dragons or the organ simulation of men)
2.The combat
3.That it's single player, for I am a misanthropic asshole in multiplayer
4. the stories that arise and the community
5. That it's all done by one guy with a dream.
