Is there an HFS on every map? Because on the wiki, it says theres one for every "embark" map, but I'm not sure if that means the map my fortress is in or the world map itself.

There will be exactly one in every region tile (the tile chosen in the middle map view on the embark) that is a mountain, and it will appear only on a local (right map) tile that is a mountain.  If you're somewhere other than mountains you won't find HFS.

Goddamn, can't remember whether or not I chose a mountainous region. Any way to check?

No, I don't think there's a way to check that, short of generating the same map again (the generation info is put in a text file if you "export local image" from your fort) and finding where your fort was.  This could involve also making a backup of your fort's save folder then abandoning it and finding it by starting the process of reclaiming it.  (You can't check for a mountain region this way, because your abandoned fort will cover up the region tile on the middle map.)

I considered that, but it's just too much trouble. Meh, I guess all I can do is entertain myself with Megabeast vs Megabeast fights.

Another, more cheaty option would be to back up your fortress's save folder, open the backup, then run the reveal utility.  Any hidden features such as HFS should be revealed, even without the designation thing it suggests on that page.

A really simple way is to load up something like Visual Fortress and take a look at the map. If there's a big spire of rock, you're likely on a mountain.

Otherwise, set it to 'reveal hidden tiles', then look at the underside of the map. There should be a hole punched through of about 6 or 7 tiles, going up a few Z-levels. That will be the 'glowing pit' itself; a form of bottomless pit.

The only real difference is fluff-wise it leading straight to wherever demons come from instead of an eventual splat.

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

Simply HAVING mountains is not the same as being on a mountain region tile, though, so that doesn't work.

And keep in mind, that even if you did embark with some mountain tiles, there is no guarantee that one of those you picked has the HFS.  The only way to really be sure that you have HFS is to change the settings in your init so that they are visible on the embark screen, then you can make sure to embark with it on your map.

Yes, change the init file to see Hidden Features and make a copy of your save. Abandone and try to reclaim. It should see the different map features (right?) I just use reveal.exe

Okay, how the hell do you guys go about looking for the HFS? The maps are so bloody big, with multiple Z levels to boot. Where the hell do I start?

The pit itself will always be on the bottom layer of the map. Start from the middle of each 48-square embark tile and work outwards.

Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.
